Lauriekay1, My son will be ABF also, but doesn't go to bootcamp until next June as he is still in high school.
Hello. New to this group. Son's on first deployment as an AB. He's excited I'm curious. Any advice or good stories to share are most welcome:)
I just added a new Album called Eisenhower. My son took his wife aboard for a tour since they were leaving today. Some of these photos would apply for any carrier if you are interested.
Bellachella: ABH rating is normally assigned to a carrier. The sailor will have berthing on the ship. There's lots of learning to do once on board.
Hi Rob and thank you for the welcome and for all the Info.
Hi MelinH and welcome to the group. My son has been in for 8 years now and has started his second re-enlistment. He is an ABH2 on the IKE. Previously served on the Stennis and made 3 deployments. Before the IKE he was in Meridian at the Naval Air Station for 2 years. He did not go to A school in Pensacola but only for a 2 week aviation indoctrination. He was assigned to the V3 divsion on the Stennis and stayed there the entire 5 years he was aboard and made E4, got both certifications in Aviation Warfare and Surface Warfare.
I cannot speak much about the A school, but basically ABH is aircraft handling whether on the flight deck or hangar deck. Moving, parking the aircraft on one of those decks. Running the elevators, driving tractors to move the aircraft, basic firefighting. I posted some stuff earlier about ABH last week that you could read. Once they qualify for yellow shirt they are getting into a supervisory position, but there are even E4s that are now yellowshirts but blueshirts even though the may do all the "quals"; it sometimes can get political.
He is now getting back up to speed after being on shore duty and is having to reqaulify, but may end up being Bay PO before they deploy. Anything else you need to know please feel free to ask.
Hi Im new here, My son is just in BC at the moment, and will be gong to P'Cola Fl to go to A school as far as i know his rate is going to be ABH. I thought Id join the group so I can learn more about his job
It is possible to cross rate. he would need to begin with the division career counselor. The only thing I can think of for ABH is working at an airport. I know my son had a friend that got out and went to work for the government as a firefighter at military airfields. That is handled by civilians. He would already have some of the qualifications.
