It depends on whether he assigned to V1 or V3 division.  My son was on the Stennis for 5 years and then went shore duty for 2 and is now back on the Ike.  He worked V3 which is the hanger bay.  There are over 15 qualifications on the hanger bay which he gets through that then he would be become a director (yellow shirt).  The ABHs on the hanger bay are basically in charge of the parking garage for the ship.  Move planes and choppers around to and from the elevators.  He would get qualified to drive the tractors to park them and move them to the elevators.  He would also get qualified to run the elevators.  There are many other things to do down there.  Flight deck involves many of the same things just a little more dangerous.  My son made E4 by the end of his first enlistment and then re-enlisted for shore duty.  He mad e 3 deployments on the Stennis and enjoyed the ship very much.  He told us recently that compared to the Stennis the Ike is a dump.  His shore duty was at Meridian Naval Air Station which was great for us since it is only 150 miles from us and he could come home every weekend.  There were not many ABHs there, mainly ABEs since it was a qaulification stop for pilots learning to catch the wire.  Subsequently, he had to qualify on a lot of ABE types of things.  There was not a lot of directing to do.  Everyone at the field were all petty officers.  He made E5 right before his time was up and was able to re-enlist for another 6. Right now I would imagine he is pretty bored since there is nothing to do in port,  I know they just got back from deployment.  Hope this helps.

He's also working out at the gym with another buddy.   He is on shore duty.  He missed passing last time by 1% body weight.  I'm not sure how much time he has but he believes he can do it.  He told me yesterday he was sore from working out, so at least that means that he's doing something right.  Now he just has to keep at it.

Kim-Dereks Mom - I know what you mean.  Right now, my oldest son is working hard to be sure he passes his PFA.  He didn't pass the last time.  If he doesn't make it this time, he'll be out in 6 months, which is not what he wants.  He likes his soda, beer & what not.  He said he's cut out all the suger drinks & just is having water.  With guys, they can drop 10-15 pounds in a week.  Sure hope he does as he doesn't know what he'll do otherwise.  Would certainly appreciate any and all prayers for him that he makes it.

One is an ABE2.  He is currently on shore duty.  Our other son is at Goose Creek in T-Track waiting for Power School - he's a nuke.

Justin's Mom aka Angie - it's always tough when they are on deployment.  I've been through 3 of them.  What does your son do?

just joining this group.  my daughter will be deployed the end of March for the 1st time.  she's been in 2 yrs. but marriage & the birth of my grandson has held her up.  Deploying is going to be traumatic, leaving that little boy

Hello. I just joined this group.  Yesterday my son arrived in Great Lakes for boot camp.  His job will be Aviation Boatswain Mate Fuel, therefore, I thought I'd join to learn as much as I can about this.

V1 could be a lot of different things.  It could be Aviation Boatswain Mate Handler,Aviation Boatswain Mate Fuels, Aviation Boatswain Mate Equipment, Aviation Ordinance.
