Laurie M: It's really amazing what they learn to do. I don't know about you, but I was very impressed with ALL these young men & women. It's amazing that folks so young are so responsible and can do so much. We all can certainly learn from these young people.

Yes. My son is a Green Skittle. When he originally came home to tell us he was going to be an ABE, my husband (fromer Navy man & on the USS Kennedy) about had a heart-attack. When our son went on his first deployment & told us, by e-mail that he was going to be on the flight deck, it was even worse. Then, on a Tiger Cruise, I watched him work on the flight deck during the flight ops show. Yes, it is difficult to think of them on the deck. But, these young people are so well trained & there are so many safety precautions that we really don't have a lot to worry about - EXCEPT WE ARE MOMS!!! We worry about everything.

Has your son been on a deployment yet? Or is he on one now?

Thank you Laurie! The Vinson is headed home but we're still sending letters to the chaplain that will distribute them.

Posting a message from the Molly Adopt a Sailor Group for the Vinson and all the other ships out there. We're hoping to get a letter to each and every crewmember on those ships:

Would you be willing to write these letters? Susan said that 22 ships will be going to Haiti and we are trying to get letters in the hand of each sailor. You can go to the MAS room for the address or contact me.
Thanks and please pass the word! Sue
CALLING ALL MOMS! Here is a chance to let ‘our’ sailors know how much we love and support them! If there is one thing every Navy mom learns during boot camp it is to write a great letter! And you Molly moms practice it each and every month sending love to our deployed!

Will you please write a letter or thank you card to a Sailor aboard the USS Carl Vinson which is conducting humanitarian and disaster relief operations? Our goal is to send over 5,000 thank you cards to Chaplain ‘Fish’ by February 10th! He will distribute the cards and letters we send to the crew on the Vinson and the other Navy ships (the USS Bataan, USS Nassau and USS Comfort headed to provide support to Haiti!

Contact your local schools, scout groups and churches! Collect as many thank you notes and cards and send them along! The best (and most cost effective) way to send them might be a flat rate box offered by the Post Office! Let these sailors know that you are proud of them and say thank you for all they are doing!

For the address of Chaplain ‘Fish’ please contact me with how many cards you have gathered and I will be happy to provide the address! Thank you so much!

When the USS Carl Vinson pulled out of Norfolk January 12th on the way to their new homeport of San Diego they were singing ‘California Dreaming’. That night a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and their destination changed. The Vinson was one of the first ships able to respond. We have all watched the news and seen the pictures. But can you imagine what it is to be at sea for the first time and called to duty in such an important mission? To feel the 95+ degree heat, experience the cry for help and pain, see the devastation up close?

Many of our sailors are boots on the ground and many more are providing support for them. Those sights and sounds will stay with them forever. The United States Navy has prepared them to do their jobs, and let's face it; we know they are the best of the best.

These sailors are pumping over 3,500 gallons of water a day to deliver to quake victims, launching well over 600 flights of aid and rescue from their deck, providing security and caring for many injured. They have given of themselves… working long hours, catching sleep when they can. Here is our chance to let them know how much we appreciate all they are doing

Laurie - see everything possible - no matter how tired you are! I was with Connie on the Stennis TC, our sailors are just so incredible!

Thanks Donna, I hadn't seen this picture either. Love it! My son is a blue shirt.

Elizabeth - don't worry, he will be fine. My son is on the Stennis (a carrier in WA) and he felt the exact same way. He was worried about deployment but once they were underway, he made some friends, got used to the base, he was fine. After they made their first port, which he loved, he said it wasn't so bad. He did come home several times over the holidays and we went up there.

I can't wait to take a Tiger Cruise. My son is on the Stennis, same as Connie's.

My husband said he came out of bootcamp an E-1. Did he forget to buy the stripes and have them sewn on? They're difficult to sew on yourself, I don't recommend it. Pay the $8 bucks, it's worth it. How long are they cranking? Does that happen after indoctrination? He'll be on the hangar deck, V-3.

My son came out of bootcamp as an E-2, I thought they all came out as E-1 minimum.
