Hi -- I am new to this group.  My son is PIR 9/13/13 and will be heading to PNS for A school for ABH.

In response to d2b2707 - they mostly fly out of ORD to PNS - they will use whatever Airlines has the space at the time for govt fares.  Usually US or AA -- All 4 carriers have 1 stop - US uses CLT -- AA uses DFW -- UA uses IAH and DL uses ATL.  They tend to use AA alot due to the fact, they have a flt an hour out of DFW to PNS.  I hope this helps out somewhat

Guess my son got bored and volunteered to go out with the Roosevelt for a 10 day qauls outing.  they needed a qualified deck supervisor for the hangar bay.

My son is an ABF (fuels).  He works on the flight deck, but other ABFs work below deck also testing the fuel, I believe is what he said.  He had to work below deck when he sprained his ankle.

He also had to do cranking when he arrived on his ship for the first 3 months.

I have heard they can TRY and change rates after a year or so. Not sure how difficult that is.

Thanks Jackie - couldn't fully recall all the colors or as some call them "skittles."
Kim - thanks for the info. My son would love Bremerton as his favorite aunt and uncle live in Seattle. I have read they don't all end up on the flight deck and alot of them do "cranking" first such as cleaning and janitorial type stuff when they are new to the ship. But it's disheartening to hear your son hasn't had a chance to do actual ABE work yet. I guess like you and others say - just go with the flow as the needs of the navy come fist. And too I've read that there are many rates (jobs) in the navy that sailors had a contract for but never actually got to do - no matter the ASVAB score. Many of the popular rates like technicians, etc are all overly manned or filled up.

The ABFs are purple shirts, not red.  They are also known as "grapes".

Comment by alsmom on August 28, 2013 at 9:57am
The green shirts are ABE, yellow shirts I think are ABH and red is ABF. might be others. If you go to you tube and type in ABH or yellow shirts or aviation boatswains you can see some of what they do.

Morning Marcelle - yes, I've learned that waiting to class up means waiting to start. Yes these rates (jobs) have a level of danger but they sure look exciting. I guess I'm just grateful they will be on a ship and not foot soldiers. Could be worse!

again sorry for questions..
what do the different color shirts mean
