Yes, that's it! Whitney Island. I bet it's gorgeous out there. Good news about the Navy, always by water, and usually a NICE place by the water :). I was wishing our son would get San Diego, my husband was stationed there before we were married, then we went East Coast (Jax, PCola) when he transitioned to flying. But, Norfolk it is, and I am having fun visiting there (and surrounding areas) as well!

ABEs can be on other boats other than carriers.  They can be stationed on land or sea duty.  There is no way to know where your sailor might end up.  It was exciting finally getting the orders and knowing.

Lauriekay1 Washington State is known as Whidbey Island.  It is a beautiful place.

Alsmom, lets see... Norfolk, Mayport Fl (soon, if not already), San Diego, Washington State (forget the city), also som overseas stationed. I'm sure others can chime in with more.
And as for waiting to class up, gee what fun...I enjoyed the time, visiting the Pensacola beaches (oh yes, and my son..) often! Free air shows every day and a beach...very tough :) the Navy Lodge there is delightful.

Can anyone tell me what ports have carriers? Trying to figure out where my SRs future duty station might be. He's supposed to be an ABE.

I found that A school doesn't always teach them what their job designation is.  Much of what they learn about their job will be on the job training.  As for waiting to class up, tell your kids to lighten up.  Pensacola facility is very much like a college dorm.  It is neat and clean, manicured lawns, 3 squares a day but you have to stand in line, and a lot of free time.  The difference is that you don't pay for them being there to learn, THEY PAY THEM FOR YOU (no allowance needed now).

I reminded my son many times, "They are paying you to sit around and wait so what is your complaint?"  He took walks to get to know the base such as USO, Navy Federal Credit Union, NEX and the library.  Why do parents stress when the kids get frustrated that they aren't getting their training right away?  Teach them how to be patient by waiting which is a required character for employment in any job and to be thankful they are not having to do 12 hour shifts right away.  I see it as a time of respite from boot camp.

I know they are in a hurry to get on a ship and deal with rocking seas, only canned foods for months, no mail for stretches at a time, and not getting to pick up a phone to call mom/dad/girlfriend/wife/kids.  Teach them to enjoy the NOW while it is here.  The best thing my son did was volunteer.  It is rewarding and he got some benefit from it (forgot what that was).  It goes on their record and occasionally he got a free t-shirt that said volunteer.  It is time to think about others instead of themselves.  And be careful of the beaches, it is usually not policed.

Hi! I haven't been checking this group in a while, I'm mostly on the Facebook PIR group 9/13 these days. Ship12 Div349
Thanks for your response RyansMom, my daughter's rate is also ABH,which she is excited about but she knows not to believe written orders, they can change at anytime! From what my SR told me, 1/3 of her compartment are ABH, one girl that had pir on 9/6 was held a week because to many ABH & they can't fly all of them out. We're keeping our fingers crossed she's not held.
My SR said ASchool is 7 weeks but that's only when she gets into ASchool, before that she has to be classed up ( take 2 prerequisite classes) but even after those classes are done does not guarantee that she will start ASchool right away.
Once they arrive at Pcola, we have to be positive and still give them encouragement and be thankful that they will have their phones available so we can contact anytime.
I was very surprised ABH was the rate my daughter chose but if she can get through bootcamp, she can definitely do this.

Is it possible for ABH school to be only 3 weeks? My husband said his orders said class was only 3 weeks long

My limited understanding is that SWCC are the special warfare boats that take Navy SEALs in and out of the places they secretly go....!

dj1, my SR is also ABH, graduating 10/11/13, I am curious what the SWCC is also....
