What the military provides!!!!

I thought we should share with each other something we know the military provides for us that maybe not everyone knows.  We need to get more active on this page we have so much information to share so let's get sharing!!!!  Let's try to make it as factual as possible ok.  Provide links if possible!!!

 

Mine is that the military will pay for you to become a certified daycare provider.  This happens at most bases, but not all so double check in your area.  If it is not provided in your are you can get it at another base and it transer with you.  I know for a fact that Pensacola, and San Diego provide these classes.  Here is my link to the San Diego information....

The classes offered through MWR of even at the Family Service Center are a great way to learn something new and also meet some new people. Some of the classes cost a fee and some don't you just have to look. The base pools many times are great for swim lessons. Sometimes they can even be offered during the day and in the evening.

As with any duty station what you get out of it will be what you put into it.

There is a crap ton of paperwork you will fill out, but I am not sure how it works since my husband and i were already married when he signed up.  I imagine it will be stuff he will give you when the time comes.  You will receive medical insurance right away and he will start receiving a housing allowance.  Are there children involved?  Base housing is just about waiting.  On the other discussion I have provided links to lincoln military housing which runs the military housing all the instructions are there.  You can not do anything with military housing until he has his hard orders.  Good Luck

My daughter married her sailor right after A school.  He got stationed in VA and could not get base housing so they found a wonderful apartment and she joined him in June of this year.  I know she needed her birth certificate, marriage license, ss card, car title, car insurance proof,  to get her Military tags, her car could not drive on base unless the insurance was in her name, so they had to get their own insurance in August when her current coverage ended. Everything is all in order now and they love it! What ship is your sailor assigned to?

K so I have found out that if you are a military spouse you can get H and R block classes for free!!!  I am way excited so here is the link to get all the info on that....

For my So Cal ladies there are families out here that adopt military families for the holidays application has to be in by OCT. 13th so get signed up.  I am not sure if they do this every where so for my other ladies check around and let us know!!!

It depends on what you prefer. Which base you are on. Do you live on base?  For us we had 2 options. TriCare Prime and TriCare standard. Ours was defaulted to standard (my husband filled it out so I don't know what he did to make it default to standard) for my son and I. We live on an Air Force base and we were not allowed to go to the hospital that they have on base (literally a 5 minute walk from my house) except for an emergency unless we had Tricare Prime. 

Tricare Prime is free, you don't pay a deductible annually or a copay at each doctors visit, prescriptions are free, and specialists are free (if you have been referred) BUT you must go to the hospital or doctors office that is assigned for your area. It will be on either the base you live on or if you don't live on base it'll be a base close to you. You'll be seen by an officer in the military that is a corpsman. 

 

Tricare Standard is not free. It is like civilian insurance. You will pay an annual deductible and you'll have copays at every doctor's visit. Prescriptions range from about 3-10 dollars and you pay a referral fee to be seen by a specialist. None of the payments are outrageous.  You can see any doctor that accepts tricare standard insurance. So you pick who you want to see and it can be a civilian doctor. 

 

We switched from standard to prime as soon as I had tried making my son an appointment and realized that we had standard. I have not been to the doctor here on base yet but I took my son into the pediatrician. I was less than satisfied but that's a story for later (and I'm very picky when it comes to my baby) I'm glad it is free because we can't afford to pay for insurance, but it is what you are comfortable with and what you can afford.
