Thanks! What did you take for I day? Tissues (a given!), water, ... what else would you recommend?

My son is reporting for I day July 1. I am trying to learn how to be a good Navy mom. Any wisdom you can share would be appreciated.

Care packages.

We sent care a few care packages. I sent thefirst one while we were Annapolis. I put things like granola packets with dried fruit, gatorade or crystal light single packages to add to water. I used to ship whatever would fit in the disposable plastic GLAD containers. They sealed well, and allowed a place to store items.

I did send single packages of fruit, and juice boxes. They tend to weigh a lot, so I sent them priority mail FLAT rate.

Ask your mid what types of things they might like.

Other things that were beneficial were sharpie markers, flexible fabric like band aids, and moleskin (similar to corn pads) for blisters.

They usually have the plebes write home and tell mom and dad they are fine. At that point, mine sent me a post it telling me "camp is fun! NOT!" He asked for a water bottle, and a big bag of peanut M & M's. Please know the detailers can go thru your plebes stuff at some point. My mid turned 18 about 2 weeks into Plebe Summer. He expressly told me NOT to send any cards.

During Plebe Summer, they will do anything to stay under the radar and blend into the woodwork. It is just part of the process, as they adjust. They do make it thru.... and even the parents.

They tell you to wait for the changes in your mid, but they never let on that we parents change too. We learn to let go a bit more, as we marvel at the level of growth, independence, and confidence.

Megan...Sending care packages usually happens right away. They don't always get them right away depending on which company they belong to. You need to know that they do not go and pick up there own mail. It is bought to the company by the detailers. The detailers pick up mail as they have time. The detailers work longer hours than the plebes.

Since you have a girl more than likely I would be sending her things that she uses such as undergarmets and hygene items. Do not send any over the counter drugs (aspirn, vitiams etc). Try not to send anything that would melt. Also try and keep your packet to the size of a shoe box.

You will learn about flat rate boxes that you can get from the post office (you can go on line and order direct from the post office and have them deliever to your home).

Perhaps we long time moms should start a discussion up above of things to include in care packages?

Keep asking questions, its the only way you will learn the inns and outs of the yard.

Megan...Yes, you will need reservations for three nights. Please remember that the academy is having a change of command so what has happened in the last few years may change this year. Just be flexible.

In my years of being at the yard, for our family it was always easier to have a hotel close to the yard, within walking distanct. Driving and parking are a huge issue in town.

Good luck to you and enjoy the rollercoaster ride.

How amazing that one short year ago, we were approaching I-day. Now he is a youngster. He has grown by leaps and bounds!

Congrats to the Class of 2010, and the incoming 2014!

Hi Robyne,

I noticed that your daughter will be attending NAPS this summer! She will love it, it is the perfect prep for the Academy. My daughter is a graduate of both programs and loved being at NAPS. Has she started running and doing her strength training? Does she know how to swim? She should be PT training now so she can make it through the summer which is very physical under warm conditions. Also on the USNA.edu website there is a link for parents to NAPS website. Join it today and ask questions there.

Please remember -- do not complain on any website in any way that would reflect poorly on your child and her abilities. Some parents get carried away and forget that these sites are not secure and things get back to our children. Not always in a good way either. Besides by the time they have made the decision to be Navy, they are in effect adults.

I will add this if you can attend her NAPS graduation, it will be one of the most impressive weekends of your life! The formal Graduation Ball in Newport is spectacular! As I'm quick to tell anyone who will listen the NAVY knows how to throw a party!

It is an awesome opportunity and she will learn much from it. Send me a pm if you'd like to chat some more.

Balitmore is also usually cheeper than Reagon or Dullles. I agree much easier to get in and out of Baltimore too.

Hi,
Just sent out the last of the paperwork from the PTR. What happens next? I know to have James there at 6:30 but is there any other mail coming?

@Kelly - thanks for being a friend, will be sending you my book of questions in a short while. Getting antsy.

Hey Sandy, my son is my oldest too and everything is so different than what friends share about their kids going off to school. Yes, I will be at the picnic. I'll be the one over on the corner trying to find myself lol but I guess all of us new moms will be doing the same.
