Hi Nani! My son just arrived at Boot Camp last Tuesday, 8/29/17! He will be a trumpet player in one of the fleet bands so pretty sure that will automatically put him in a 900 division at boot camp.

Does anybody in this group still have recruits in BC??

Thank you karen44 for all your tips. Nice to hear from other musician's navy life. My son is excited and nervous at the same time. Being older means you belong to the group of "not too many of you".

It would be nice to keep in touch and who knows maybe my son and you guys run into each other one of these days. I'll keep you updated as to how he does in BC. He worries a little about the physical part of it and keeping up with it. He is not athletic naturally, he's just working hard now to accomplish what needs to be done to make it through BC.

My wife and I are excited and know that the benefits and rewards of navy in the music world, no other company in the world offers you that. Good luck to you and your husband.

I will update you with my son's results and please let us know how you do in Japan. I think you'll love it. It's not a perfect world, but it's a different kind of experience.

My husband is 34 and has a DMA in jazz clarinet from NEC. He plays classical too obviously (he has to for this). Yep, work for musicians is hard to get. I'm a violist too.

Yeah I think the musicians tend to be older, which makes the immaturity of the younger ones annoying at times :)
Good that he's in great shape. Tell him good luck from me, I wouldn't want to do it. I think it was mostly hard for my husband because he missed me and communication is rather sparse, and he was not used to the military at all, and there is no personal freedom/time. I guess the best advice I've heard is to count down the Fridays, not the days, and try not to stand out much :)
The music school will be a better time! Although he might be the only Navy person there when he gets there! It's mostly Marines.

Thank you karen44. My son is a 29 year old french horn player. He has a bachelors, a masters in music and a certificate of performance. After realizing how hard it is to get hired by a major philharmonic, we looked at the benefits that the Navy offers, in the music program.

He will start BC on 03/25 next week. Do you have any suggestions for BC.Things your husband would've liked to know, ahead of time, when he got to bootcamp. Or any tips that would help my son got through BC easier (if there is such a thing)

My son has been preparing physically and he is 10 pounds under the required weight, doing the number of push/sit-ups and running the 1.5 miles in the required time already. There is confusion with the number of push-ups and curl-ups, that they require for PFA. Is it, do as many as you can in two minutes or is it do the number you are supposed to do, according to your age. He is a great swimmer, so no problem there.

Other than that, Asia is a great place to know. We've been there many times. Good luck to you guys,

Thanks for your time.

My husband is in the bands, he just finished A school and we are headed out to Japan soon. What are your questions? :)

This seems to be a very inactive site. Just in case, my son is going to BC on 03/25/15. Joining the music program. It'd be nice to hear from if any others are going in as musicians…. Good Luck

ProudNavyMom, I sent you a friend request. Our sailors graduated together 9/14. We met at the airport.

Hi All,

I have a few questions about the Music School:

Will Sailors be allowed leave for Christmas?

What is graduation like?  Can family attend?  How do we find out what date it will be?  My Sailor starts class tomorrow..

I visited the Navy School of Music website, but I couldn't find any of these issues.

Thanks!
