Kathy, I need to chime in here...

When my husband was at Fitzsimons for two years he had to find everything out on his own. If you didn't ask you were not told. We missed out on a lot of benefits because we just didn't know. So please use any and all resources, like Craig, to take care of business...And your rights! The military took your son as is. Does not matter how he got ill or injured, they are responsible for him.

Go with my thoughts and lots of hugs.

Craig-you are so right...they tend to keep these kids in the dark. I work with MEBs on the Army side. Much the same process for all branches. Educate and protect!!!  Maybe together we can help Kathy.

Craig - Thank you so much for this information.  It's good for all of us to know in case our sailor is in Kathy's son's this situation.  It can happen to any of us.   I have printed it an placed it in my NAVY folder.

Kathy, you and your son are in our thoughts and prayers!

Kathy - Sorry to hear about your son.

Now is the time he needs to protect himself.  You have got to tell him to copy all medical documentation that he can submit for his disability.  He will probably say it's all on the computer, which it's not.  All recent documentation and lab result do not show up.  He needs to compare what he's got in permanent record against what is in his local record. Once he is processed out, those records are extremely hard to get.

Secondly, when he files his claim, he needs to NOT go through the VA.  He needs a third party to do all the work for him.  It is free.  Have him go the the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) office and have them do the leg work.  They will look at his record thoroughly, and will find all sorts of things.  The bottomline is getting someone on your sons side and not the VA which is looking to save all sorts of money.

Next, start reading this group section.  Dave_M works in the claims department of the VA and knows his stuff.  You will find out how to do the whole process:

Your son needs to look out after his lifelong benefit that he will receive.  He earned it.  If you have any questions, just pm me, I can help you.  I live in Centennial (south Aurora) and can even meet you for lunch somewhere.

Your sailor needs to protect himself and his benefits.

Hi everyone, new to this group and live in Littleton. I was hoping to meet some new people in the same boat...no pun intended.

Kathy, your sailor and family are in my prayers. I am heartbroken for him and you. Your post brought tears to my eyes as did Julie's. Please don't feel you must leave the group just because your son will not be in the navy anymore. If anything like the Marines " Once a sailor, ALWAYS a Sailor"

KathyMMom - Our family is also sending prayers and positive thoughts to your sailor and all of you.

Kathy

So sorry to hear about your son also. I sent you a friend request. I work with MEB soldiers so may have some suggestions.

I am so sorry to hear about your son, Kathy.  You and your family with be in my thoughts and prayers.  Take care of yourself, too.  I know you will focus a lot on supporting him, it's what us moms do.  But just reading your words below...it's hard for you too...be good to yourself.

All my best, Cathy

KathyMmom - I too am heartbroken to hear about your son. I have 3 kids, 2 of them have a chronic illness and are in wheelchairs, so can relate to the heartache you feel and sorrow you feel for your son. After my oldest son enlisted and was in BC this summer, he told us in his first letter home, how his inspiration for joining and doing well was because his younger siblings would never get the chance to.  He is doing it for them and they keep him motivated.

Your will somehow find another path to leave his mark on this world.  Your son has the heart to be a sailor so he has strength to do great things!   Keep strong for him.  Don't let him give up!   Somehow find a way to turn his illness into a poistive and that will help him move forward.     It might take a while but with the right attitude, he will succeed!  You are in my thoughts and prayers!
