OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Jana, "making rank" is a general military term for moving up, getting promotions as they train and get their time in.

Can someone explain to me what "making rank" means? My son is also colorblind and couldn't do the job he originally wanted to do, so his recruiter told him that most people that couldn't do that job go for Hospital corpsman. Not sure why, as the two are not even close from what I can tell, but what do I know?

Hi - My name is Kim. My son is currently in Bootcamp and will then go on to A school in San Antonio as an HM. In his last letter he said he was told The Navy has too many corpsman and it's hard to make rank..... is this something he should be concerned with? He's wondering if he should consider cross rating to MA? Or should he stay the course and forge ahead? Thanks for any words of wisdom...

I asked my son about anything concerning 5000 corpsmen, he said it was an interesting comment "considering the Marines and the Navy are downsizing".
A billet can mean lodging or the actual personnel position so I'm not sure what a billet for 5000 corpsmen even means...housing?

kdking, you're kidding right? that's why they call it Scuttlebutt....no one knows what's true or not! The Navy is just a micro reality of the big old world, rumors can run rampant. Seems the corpsman slot is always available to recruiters....

Kdking60, I have read over the past couple of years of recruits being called up to boot earlier. Join Boot Camp Moms. They are extremely helpful. If this 5,000 Corpsman thing is true, seems like it may happen.

Karenmjm, I hope you reported your recruiter to the Navy. Our recruiter told us to make sure we were completely honest on the application because it could hurt them at Boot Camp and also that it could definitely come back on him. He said he would be put up in front of the Board and sweat big time for misleading a recruit. We, though, had a terrific recruiter who still keeps in touch with us and the boys.

I'm sorry to hear that things have not gone well with the recruiter for some. I really have no issues with our sons recruiter. He has been very good to him and truly appears to be looking out for his best interests. I was curious to know if any recruits have gone to boot camp prior to the date given to them at MEPS.

My sailor was very honest with his recruiter, but the recruiter told us to flat out deny my sailor had been diagnosed with ADD. When my sailor got to BC, he was confronted with the fact he had lied, RTC had my son's school records. He was honest with RTC and told them that his recruiter knew and had told him to deny the diagnosis. On top of all the stress at BC, my sailor then had to go through a psychological review to determine if he would be allowed to stay at BC. Long story, short everything was fine, but I was really upset with the recruiter.
