Ruthella, thankful your son was no where around that mess, they are, after all, young Marines and drinking doesn't bring out the brains in many people.

Between my nephew's terrible accident at 16 and the years of rehabs following when my son was about 11, and now being a corpsman, he seems to think about that driving thing...I'm told there is ALWAYS a designated driver. I hope it's true! He knows what can happen and what life is like after a devestating car accident. I know he'll never forget the sight of that respirator in ICU hooked up to his older, most admired athletic cousin...or what has become of his cousin since. He just won't.

Where do you keep all that stuff, Ruthella? I talk about selling the house but I'm the storage facility for most of my family.

you know, I don't know...I have done it with the peppers frozen..I rinse them with water, pat them dry and then put the oil on them and stick them right in the oven, they do great, nice little brown blister spots, yum. I've also reheated the roasted broc after it's been in the fridge, and it's okay, pretty good. Try it with some of it, the worst you will have is some wilted roasted broc, but you can throw it in some pasta....it just might not have the crunch.

Gloria, do you eat steamed broccoli anymore? not me...mushy.

I have a friend here in Austin, a musician and author, Mary Kyle, who has written a children's book about a little girl whose father is deployed over seas, and reading it just put me in tears, but I think I over react. We're working with some facebook Navy moms and others to get this book into the hands of deployed personnel to send back to their elementary school age children. It's called A Valentine for Miranda. Any ideas?

Roasted broccoli...house concert favorite, once you eat it this way, you will not eat it any other way.

Cut into small florets ( I buy the big bag at Costco, less cutting todo)...use a good sheet pan, spread out the broc, sprinkle liberally with olive oil, get your hand in it, you want the broc to glisten, not to be soaked....sprinkle with kosher salt (each piece of broc gets a touch), black pepper and minced garlic. Now, you can mince fresh garlic but I use the sprinkle stuff from the seasoning's aisle....place in a 375 degree oven for 7-15 minutes...I like it crispy, and I mean it's turning black on the little buds, it's so good! You can roast carrots (longer, I use the little ones), peppers ( I like the red/orange/yellow sweet ones), tomatoes (the yucky ones? slice and make sure both sides have oil, roast slowly until they carmelize...slowly means long time low oven) The tomatoes never make it to the serving platters. We eat them all. This is something you can make in the morning, platter up, put saran wrap on it and serve in the afternoon at room temp.

I thought about that, Gloria...but when I called my "regular" nurse wasn't there...kind of threw me off. I wanted to get a cheaper generic if it doesn't make any difference to me medically anyway, so this never happens again.

I had no idea going off of them for a month would make so much difference, this was a really painful gall bladder episode. Thank goodness for my doc and his doc's advice...who knew?

Corpsman son story...I've been sick. Nausea, yucky, pain in the side sick. Due to an insurance audit, I lost my health insurance for about a month...and didn't get my cholesterol meds...corpman son calls " MOM! get your meds, now..." seems the gall bladder responds rapidly to jumps in cholesterol. So...now I'm hasseling with Walgreens who wants 125 bucks for the same medicine that costco has for 16 dollars! But the kid is probably right...handy thing, those corpsman kids.

Uli, I have not had coffee since Saturday morning. I wonder if it's safe yet...I'd love a cup of coffee....really dark roasted oily bean coffee, fresh ground...yumm.

and yes MY SON will be instructing in San Antonio! if you knew how many smiles that draws in the old neighborhood, you'd crack up...him? a teacher? he drove teachers literally to early retirement!

Wade, most of our kids are (or will be) FMF, most corpsmen go into that program, it trains them to be field combat corpsmen. The A school at Camp Lajuene will start him on that path.

Angie..how nice to get a chair! I'm old, that works for me! but while I am personally very happy to be able to see my son's face frequently (since I haven't had a son hug in about 10 months, but who is counting?), I will still be thinking about those deployed kids, especially the unit he served with in Iraq which will soon be deployed again, as I know he will be thinking about them, too. I only know Kristine and another couple of moms left with that unit, but he has made life time friends in that group of young Marines and corpsmen, and I know he thinks about them alot. Friends and families in warzones just do not leave your brain, I guess. How did our mothers/grandmothers/ gggrandmothers do this?
Comment by TexasDocMom on October 6, 2009 at 12:03am
Kristine, with the news lately, it's got to be gut wrenching for all of you right now, please know you are in our prayers and thoughts, all the time.

Ruth, whoever bothered you on the other threads has issues you don't need to deal with, just stick here.

Here's my take on the corpsman training after they leave the military. One of my son's buddies from field training went immediately to Iraq, and then got out right after he returned. It was about then we had all the mess about the vet's hospitals surface, and I thought...that is where these "retiring" young docs should be...in those hospitals, taking care of those vets they helped bring home. Then, with the focus on health care reform...picture store front clinics, manned by our young docs when they leave the Navy. Open 7am-7pm, they do triage, stitch up cut fingers, diagnose athlete's foot (ha!) etc...same thing they do in the BAC all day long. Work with or under Drs or PA's.... they could work part time, continuing their education...what do you think?
