OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

On the travel time - their leave time does not begin until they get to American soil. In the case of Ralph's son, he flew into Atlanta which is apparently a hub for our soldiers and they have a USO like they did at the Chicago airport. Once they got to Atlanta they were issued their travel tickets to their home airports as well as return flight to Atlanta, once back to Atlanta they are issued their travel back to the sand. I can only imagine how awesome the people are to our returning soldiers, just thinking of how wonderful they were on Christmas Eve at O'Hare when the airport was full of fresh faced, just out of boot camp sailors!

Here at my office, myself on one other gentleman have children in the military. His son is in South Afganistan right now in the Army. He was home a couple of weeks ago on leave and we were talking about how long it takes to travel from there to here (took his son 6 days to get from Afganistan to Altanta) and then just a short flight home to Tampa. Anyway, he was saying how wonderful the people at the airports were to the soldiers coming home, and he got all teared up. This is a big, tough, utilities foreman talking about his son, so it's not just us moms that tear up with pride, big ol dads do it too! :0)

coyote brown is the color...My son wore them in Iraq, he said they are great, but not good where it is wet and damp, they absorb water....I'm not sure about "warm" but they protect the shins where the boots lace and where the Marines have put duct tape to protect their skin there from the rubbing laces.
they have a "military" section with all types of socks.

Yes, it's been my understanding that the majority of corpsmen go inot FMTB. They might not go into units going to war zones, but they get the training. The next step, FMF training...I think, is not necessarily automatic for corpsmen. I'll have to check with my son. Tonight is not a good night to call, he's in Myrtle Beach, somehow I think a mom call right now might not be the smartest move.

In 2010, all military medical training will be in San Antonio, at Fort Sam. There is a tremendous amount of building going on there ( good for San Antonio's economy!) right now. I kind of remember hearing that the Army and Navy medical training will still be, for the most part, separate but surely it will benefit all the new trainees someway.
My son will be assigned as an instructor there sometime in October ( we think, it's the Navy) along with a couple of his buddies and Inga's daughter, an instructor in GL Corpsman school, will be there in 2010.
So, it's entirely possible that our San Antonio and Central Texas moms will be hosting some big dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and all year long for sailors away from home!
