I had no doubt when my son reenlisted that he would be deployed again, either back to Iraq or to Afghanistan...but when he said he had orders to CCNAS here in Texas, I thought it was a done deal for at least a year...then he'd get bored with the beach or driving home every weekend and volunteer to be deployed. I had no idea he would even THINK of not giving me a few months of that!! Last year he deployed on my 60th birthday to Iraq. Sucked.

Field Corpsmen walk a kinda different line...not quite Navy, not quite Marine..."the Docs"....when my son deployed with his Marine unit on MEU aboard a ship, he really learned that. I didn't hear from him for a long time, turns out the "mail guy"...and the guy in charge of assigning email addresses, etc...told him he was last in line to get one because "he wasn't a sailor...not Navy"...what an ass. And when I shared that on my Marine moms message board, I literally got dozens of emails, from moms, from Marine vets and from current Marines...all who told me about the Marines and their Docs....and what my son should say to that "ass" sometime. My son just said "my buddies handled him"...I have no idea what that means, but I know he didn't have any more problems. Docs have control of their Marines in many ways. My son told me a story about training someplace, and how one Marine spit on the sand floor of the mess tent....(I'm a caterer, he knew I would be outraged!)...so I asked what happend..."he cleaned it up..." and then..."took him all day"...why? because Matt had him haul everything out and "clean" the whole floor. "He SPIT on the floor, mom!"...and I'm bettin' he didn't do it again. Hard to imagine my little boy being a bad ass...but I hear those Docs are "tough mofo's...the toughest ones around"...from a Marine friend.

who knew?

Vernita, if you go back to previous posts since the inception of this thread, you'll find these same type of posts, it's something that needs to be repeated with almost every new group of moms...and it's a hard lesson to learn, and one that is very important to the individual sailor. That sailor will be, in the long run, very pleased someone shared this advice with his/her mom. Those of us who grew up in the military or served in the military or have that 20 year experience of being a Navy wife, or a more experienced Navy mom, have a little different outlook than some who have not shared those experiences, and really, it's a good thing to do, sharing that experience.
You, Uli or I were not out of line to do so, and you owe no one an apology.

Now, tell me how to stay calm when my son today calmly says he'd deploy next month if he wasn't having lasik surgery next Monday. He's supposed to be coming to CCNAS in September! and he says "but, I can deploy if I want to..." and when I say "where?" he says Afghanistan! with the 3/9! I know he won't volunteer to go when it will be winter there...but summer doesn't bother him. I would have made him burn all that leave if I had even a hint that he would deploy, I haven't seen him but at Christmas since he got back last November. I know I'm lucky, only one son in the military to deploy, but still I'm a little pissed at him. Good grief. Come to Texas for at least a year...then deploy again. ugh. He's turned into "men" ugh...MEN.

Uli, I called the store and altho he said it was for "immediate family" he defined that as spouse or children. Just to bug him I told him the military defines it as "parents, spouse or children" if there is a family emergency or funeral. He told me he would be happy to honor the discount...but I'm not going back there in that traffic for 25 bucks! thanks, tho, for thinking of me!

Well, Uli...I wish I had known about that 10%off at Lowes...I had on my "United States Navy Mom" t shirt when I checked out..twice...and no one said a word! bummer...I bought a big ol lawnmower!...for that Navy son to use when he comes home this summer. An electric one so when he's not here, I can start the darn thing!

Happy Memorial Day to all...hope you're all having time with family and friends today.

Thank you,Uli, for your words of wisdom. I know when my son books a flight (or I book it for him when he's deployed), the airlines state clearly that to receive discounts, etc, Travel orders will have to be presented, even if he travels in uniform (which he does not). I know most airlines will grant passes to military family members to go to the gate, again, my son says "no...too emotional, mom".

But the most important piece of advice: DO NOT contact Homeland Security or any one else on your own. He is a NAVY Sailor, no longer Mommies little Boy, no matter how much we want to think that.

Remember that every time. Unless your child makes a specific request to you, do not contact anyone, there is a chain of command, and your child HAS to follow it. It can bring repercussions that you would never think of to go above anyone's head on some private mission of "it isn't right". Probably, it isn't right, but it's not our job any more. One of the hardest military mom lessons to learn, but very important to our kids that we do it.

Have a great holiday today!!

Don't forget anysailor.com and the links there to anymarine.com and anysoldier.com. I like these because the folks tell you what they need. Different areas have different needs, and alot depends on the size of the base, whether there is shopping etc. Alot of times the corpsmen go there to list the needs of their unit, and then hand out the stuff.

My son said the misc packages that came in were brought into a main room and then dumped on the floor for people to go see if there was anything they needed and they had stuff leftover and didn't know what to do with it. So I like knowing they get what they need. Also remember those ladies might have choices about personal items. I know I would!

thanks to all of you that do this!

Our town doesn't have a parade but in the center of town there is a lake, called Orange Lake and they have a memorial ceremony there. All the way around the lake there is a walkway and the bricks in the walkway are engraved with the names of those that have served their country, you can buy a brick at townhall and have it added to the walkway. There is a large memorial at the southern most side of the lake and then there are 4 stops with benches along the way and each of the services has their own stop and memorial. It's very humbling to walk the lake.
