Congratulations USS Mitscher! Soooo very glad to have you all back home safe and sound! Prayers having been answered! What an awesome welcoming it was, even if the rained drenched the earth, it did not the spirit!

beach ball smiley Pictures, Images and Photos

Hi all, off to the beach for a few days of sun and fun with our kids...while we still have them home! Catch up with you when we return.

Congrats to your daughter Rebecca! It's nice that she has gotten his behind her. MCPON West is making this a high priority for our sailors.

Jackie - your son is going to have a month to remember!

Enjoy your children, Mary!! My son was amazed that so many people were interested in seeing his ship. We had about 15 family members go see the ship, of course my son gave them a personal tour after they did the main tour. They all loved it.

NavyMom when I toured the Benfold over Easter weekend, it was really awesome to see where he sleeps and eats and works!! I didn't care about all the guns and stuff, I just wanted to see where he lived. :)

Everyone is so busy this week Dianne. In our house we have a sailor home on leave and a daughter that is one week away from returning to college so like many families we are going to try to squeeze some vacation time in with our kids before we have to send them both off. We will be spending next week in Hilton Head Island so I will be off line for a while.

I'm not sure how many families realize opening a ship up for viewing is quite special. I hope I'll get to see our son's destroyer one day but in the meantime...I'd take advantage of any ship that I can.

I had the luxury of traveling with some of our other Navy moms to Norfolk for a homecoming and got to see the USS Ramage and a tour of the USS Truman. A great experience.

I'm really surprised that only one person commented on the 11,000 people touring the Benfold...thanks Mary. This was a very cool thing for both the navy and southern california. It's extremely rare that they open up a destroyer to the public for tours and I thought it was amazing that so many people went through the ship in just 2 days. Guess it's just because it was my son's ship.

Mabel! haven't seen you in forever - so glad that you got some time with your son if only briefly. I was at the post office Saturday they now offer four different flat rate boxes, just remember to grab the custom forms at the same time. I understand they will come to the house and pick the boxes up when you are ready to ship them but I have not taken advantage of that service as of yet.

20 lbs of Reeses -- some happy sailors on that ship Melinda! For Nick's 22nd birthday I sent him 22 lbs. of Jelly Belly jellybeans. He has always loved Jelly Beans and they have so many fun flavors and offered free shipping.

Seasoned moms probably know this but white t-shirts can be in heavy demand when they are deployed. The laundry on the ship --- does not generate the whites of shirts and they can have a hard time getting them. So new white t-shirts might be well received.

Liz: Keep in mind they don't have much space on a ship. I asked my son what he wanted and needed and then shipped accordingly. I threw in a few little suprises (Valentines candy, Christmas candy and his favorite sports team stuff). Sometimes when they go into port the NEX will be out of the things they need and that's where Mom comes in handy!! :)

An email a day would certainly make me happy! I'm an old Navy wife and was tormented by the days of no phones, no email and a good three weeks just to get a few lines scribbled that they are working 17 hours days...yes, much more family friendly now :-)

Wow ladies, I had not thought about that one yet! Easier time on deployments than boot camp?! I agree the communications are certainly better -yea! And at least they are seeing the world -- and you are so right Donna, be it on shore or sea ------- not seeing your children for extended amounts of times is just damn hard no matter how much fun THEY might be having!

Dianne - thanks for sharing the links on the Benfold, that is a lot of traffic in a couple of days. Nice for the community and hopefully the sailors enjoyed showing off their home.
