Charlie Rose last nite had Admirial Michael Mullins on, and they were discussing the situation with the ship in the international coastal waterways by China. He said alot of interesting things (normally in the past, I would only half listen to this type of news. Now, it hits Home and my ears tune in more.) He felt that very little will come out of this situation, that China and US are "in talks" and that neither want anything to come out of it, that they want to resolve it in a friendly and civil way. So ladies, I am with you, I am praying that this happens. I see so much all over the world, in unrest, and it is frightening. More unsettling against us, and it does worry all of us I know. So Ann, your son will be in deep prayer from me, plus all the rest of his crew, and to those on the defenseless Navy craft already there.
Regina, if you have no one else that is asking for your generous offer of the powdered Gatorade, you may think about sending to troops over in the sand box. They are always in great demand to take away from the awful water they there. We have a site on here (Mollys Adopt a Sailor Project) that picks a unit a month and showers them with boxes of various items! Our group this month is a medivac unit in Afghanistan, and he has been emailing several moms already, and has taken time out to thank so many! Hes a young dad of 3 little girls himself, and sent photos! It is awesome!
DarQuita, hope you hear from your sailor very soon.

090311-N-1825E-018 ROTA, Spain (March 11, 2009) Electricians Mate 2nd Class John Brown, assigned to the Naval Station Rota Port Operations Department, throws a mooring line to Sailors aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) during a port call to Naval Station Rota. Vella Gulf is on a scheduled port visit to Rota during a deployment with the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group.

Hi Peggy and welcome to our group! My son is a STG3 and has been in the Navy for a year now. He'll be returning from the Gulf soon. This was his first deployment.
I'll try and answer your question, what life is like on a destroyer......about 300 Sailors, so they make friends quickly. The STG's stick together and have their own sleeping area and work area. There are usually about 10 - 15 STG's on a destroyer. When your son first joins his ship he will have to "qualify" before he actually starts his sonar job. He will learn all about the ship including the galley....lol. He won't be having a blast....but everyone has to go through the process....my son has no complaints. He said the food is good. He likes working out in the gym. He has a laptop, iPod, XBox, digital camera, and tons of DVD's. They get to make calls from the ship when they are on deployment (anywhere from 1 - 8 months, depending on what they're doing). And they have access to email. Not everyday, but usually at least once a week. Sometimes more. my fingers are tired. more later....lol

The Navy never released the names of the Destroyers that were assigned off the coast of Somolia. Is China closer to San Diego or Norfolk. DDG 93 is stationed in San Diego. The Navy will probably have a press release for it soon. thanks for the heads up

Welcom DarQuita! Glad you found us and joined! I'm sorry you haven't seen your son for 2 years. That's a long time to go without a hug from your child. But you do have something to look forward to and the way time flies, you'll be hugging him in no time at all!

Hi Jacqi! Welcome to our little group. Glad to hear you enjoyed your Tiger Cruise. I am so looking forward to mine. My son just made PO3....just a baby. He's due back from deployment and we were hoping for a Tiger Cruise but the ship didn't get the okay. Maybe next time when they come from the south where it's a little warmer.
Wow, the Pentagon!! How wonderful!! You must be so proud of him. Do they have tours???

Here's what I heard on the news.....China sent fishing boats out to meet up with our destroyers....IF China was serious, they would have sent out some of their ships. China did NOT want to set off any alarms with the United States.

We can discuss the issues Ann as long as the Navy as released the information. I was listening to NPR (National Public Radio) this morning and they had a very indepth discussion about it. So the Navy must have released that info. Once an incident has taken place, it's USUALLY safe to talk about. I hope this helps!
