Comment by Tammy Lawson on October 19, 2008 at 9:28pm just know they go out a lot and sometimes they can't tell you where they are but you get e-mails and it is wonderful. My son tells me all the places he has been when he gets back. I look forward to his stories. Tokyo is beautiful and Matt found all kinds of places to visit and he has only been there for about 4 months. Any questions threw them out there :)

Comment by proud navy mom on October 19, 2008 at 1:59pm Hi all,
My son Mike is on the Stehem DDG63 out of Yokosuka Japan.
Judy, thanks for the post about gift Ideas. I also get "I don't need anything". These boys don't understand that we moms like to buy things for our boys (girls), which helps us feel in touch, at least that's I how feel anyway! It is very hard for moms to realize our kids just don't need us anymore!!

Comment by Judy Miller on October 19, 2008 at 11:09am Rehne and others, for Chris, he enjoys just about Anything. Some examples are - Pepperidge farm cookies, hot chocolate packets, powdered individual gatorade or propel mixes & drink bottle to use it with, different power bars (cliff, etc.) for when he doesn't have time to get to the mess hall, mid-way through deployment new gym socks/white t-shirts plus running shoes as all gets grey after awhile, microwave individual desserts or other options to microwave, books, vitamins, snack type food - pistachios, popcorn, poppycock, beef jerky, etc. Nothing in a glass bottle for obvious reasons and apparently avoid chocolate is it melts enroute to the ship. :-) For holidays past, I found traditional types of treats at World Market so gingerbread, candy canes, etc. to at least generate some holiday spirit. Last year, I sent a mini Christmas tree and some holiday decorations but that wasn't on a destroyer was a supply ship at that time but his office area did enjoy it!! They get all the latest movies on the ship so buying/sending those DVDs aren't necessary. We've sent more "Halloween", or Holiday type themed movies that wouldn't necessarily be shown. Without much storage, the gift ideas are really tough....... If your sailor didn't take their own sheets/blanket/pillow, I can guarantee you that they'll love what you send to refresh what the Navy supplies on the ship. And, if they didn't bring flip-flops for the shower, I'd strongly recommend that as well.
Good luck!!
Judy
