Comment by Squid's Mom - Rehne' on October 18, 2008 at 8:35am Judy & Bri, Thank you both for the info, I do not have face book but I'll check into it...And yes Judy you are bad with the "ARE YOU STILL ALIVE" but I might just be bad with you. LOL..... That should knock his socks off. peuuw! rolf....... James is going to buy a phone card at the ships store so he can call us ( this was after I told him "Chris calls his mom!" so talking on here really does help. Thank goodness I talked him into putting his cell phone on military shutdown, this has a smell fee per month usually ($5-10). But now I will tell him of your experience and reinforce the fact HE mad a very good decision..... Also I was reading the Navy News and they posted theHoliday Mail Schedule . Needless to say I better get shopping (oh like that will be hard).LOL Oh, can you tell me of any good things to send in the "just because" packages. I know space is limited on ship and he is not real forthcoming about his needs/wants I get the "MOM! I'm okay." so any suggestions would be appreciated. Have a wonderful day.

Comment by Judy Miller on October 17, 2008 at 4:20pm Bri and Rehne, I don't think any instant messaging allowed on these ships for security reasons and think network reasons so we're out of luck on the IMing. I know that they were in a port last couple days but now are headed out again. I sometimes get a more rapid email response (after a few days without an email) if i put in the subject ... ARE YOU STILL ALIVE PLS CONFIRM ..!!! :-) Yes, I am bad that way so he usually will respond with a quick one ... stating yes alive but buried in work right now but it does seem to be effective so I do leverage this to at least get some info/responsive and then a longer email might follow. Chris does call when in a port but I had to enable his cell phone for international calling and cannot imagine the bill when it arrives. Fortunately, they are still in the european area but last year he was checking voicemail from the ship and it cost a fortune as went through like 10 cell towers and was anywhere from like $2 - $10/tower! I croaked. I think he's figured out that it is better if he gets some kind of a phone card over there that is an 800 number or something and is cheaper then for him to typically call me or some cell phone over there that you buy minutes from via AT&T and I was able to add minutes to that 800 cell card but only works in port. I think this time is he using his cell phone which is on our plan so dread next bill .... They did get mail/packages today as he sent me a few sentences thanking me for his packages as needed some supplies. It'll take longer though once they get farther and farther away and was 3-4 weeks his past 2 deployments especially for holidays. These took roughly 2.5 weeks. That's about all I am aware for the Nitze at least ......

I do not know about IMing. But I do know that Brandon usually "gets to work" at 7AM (midnight my time) and we email back and forth before he starts the "workday" and I go to bed - the only downside is that all their emails are read for security. Also, we sometimes talk through facebook.

Comment by Judy Miller on October 9, 2008 at 6:54pm Hey all, my name is Judy (as well) and my son Chris is currently deployed on the Nitze (DDG94) and left 9/12 for believe roughly 7 months. He has written me pretty often. They got to stop in Italy and he had leave so spent a night in Rome so there's a fun side!! He's now back out of port and not sure where he's heading as that would be "top secret" untellable information. He's been incredibly busy not sure doing what all but know he's got some form of a Navy certification to do (ESWS) or something like that. Plus, he's taking 2 college courses on deployment so has studies to do there as well. He seems extremely busy but am sure a lot to do out there. I do miss him though but at least he was able to call from Italy as a phone call makes a world of difference.
