My daughter is on the Porter. I guess at this point she sees no way out other than to stick it out and pray for a miracle that she get a room in the barracks. She is enlisted and is Undes. These past few days she has spent her days painting the ship. while she does take pride in her work and always gives 100% at everything she does, I think she is beginning to feel insignificant and discouraged :(

I tell her to stay positive and envision herself where she wants to be and God willing, she will be where she wants to be...as a Corpsman.

my heart aches for her but I have faith and hope in God's plans for her future.

Hi Leach 73,

My son is enlisted on a destroyer in San Diego.  He lived on the ship for 10 months before he was able to get a barracks room, and only then because the ship was in dry dock.  The ship is coming out of the ship yards soon, so he will have to give up the room.  There is a months-long wait for rooms on his base.  They DO get used to it eventually.  And what will help your daughter the most is when she makes a friend or two to commiserate with.  Also my son has gone into town with another sailor or two and gotten a cheep hotel room on the weekends to share just for a break.  But overall, they will adjust in time.

Leach 73...I'm sorry I just realized our daughter's are probably on different ships and my daughter couldn't seek your daughter out to talk to her...

Hi Leach73 yes my daugther stays on the ship when she has duty has even gone and spent the night before an early morning. She went thru the last deployment so pretty use to it. I know she has brought blankets, pillows of her own to make it more comfortable. I'm not sure if your daughter is enlisted or an officer, my daughter is an officer and they have more room in the barracks then enlisted...poor enlisted look crammed in the ship!
Are you on Facebook? if so, private message me perhaps you can give me your daughter's name and I can have my daughter seek her out and watch out for her since my daughter is now an "old" hand at ship life.
I know it's very hard having them away from us, my son is also in the Navy and it has been an adjustment. Constant praying for them and strength for me..lol
My daughter did have an apt which she gave up before the deployement, she lived on her own. She now has moved her stuff to her boyfriends apt, he's on deployement, she seems to feel comfortable there.

TwoForTheNavy -

Does your daughter stay on a ship?

My daugther has been there one week and is having a hard time adjusting to staying on her ship. I'm worried about her. Fortunately we were able to take a car to her and that she was so appreciative for but last night we were on the phone and she just seems so down...and lonely. She says most people don't stay on the ship and at night sometimes she is alone :(

she told me something about an application for the barracks but that there is a waiting list so that didn't lift her spirits. She does have a friend that lives off base but there are lots of roommates in that apartment and while she did stay there one night, she doesn't feel comfortable there.

I pray myself to sleep for my child and wake up with her on my mind and still praying for her.

good morning to all!

I made the 14 road trip on Saturday to take the car to my Sailor. Started off in Illinois and drove thru Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and into Virginia. Perfect weather, no incidents, arrived safely, Thank God. Flew back on Sunday evening, Norfolk to NY to Chicago. The things we do for our kids....gotta love 'em!

Hope to go back to visit her soon...and stay for a few days to get a tour and do some sight-seeing.

HOOYAH!

Hi Leach73

My daughter is stationed in Norfolk and yes she drives a car. Things seem spread out in VA so a car seems necessary.

the subject of cars was on my other group of Norfolk Sailors...i will repost there but I will gladly accept feedback from anyone here too! Thanks!!
