Ang,

Same here my son was so nervous, threw up the entire night before he left and was so worried because he was leaving alone and not knowing anyone. But, he is a very outgoing, so makes friends easily.  I know he will do just fine, all lot of patience and he will do well.  Its just so hard letting go,  Mom's take it the hardest I think.  I have found a lot of comfort in Navy 4 Moms and I am so happy that we can all share our experiences together and be a support to one another.

Debbie,
Thanks so much for sharing. I know that my Kevin is happy with his decision too. I see the smile all over his face every time he talks to anyone about the Navy. I love your photo of Kevin. Funny thing my name is Debbie and my son is Kevin, thanks for sharing it truly means alot to have this support and I will definitely check out the Ombudsman information. I hope to be able to meet Kevin's ship when it comes back. I wasn't able to be at the ship to see it off but I know if I was I would be crying the entire time. *Thats what happen when I took him to the airport and said good-bye. I sat there and watch him board the plane and waited until the plane left the gate and watch it until it took off into the air. Cried the entire trip to the car and in the car sat and cried some more. Even to the point of having a panic attack. He is my baby, and only 18 years old. But I honestly have to say he made the choice with our blessings. And I am so proud of him.

Hello all,

Well this is my first experience with a deployment. My son left Saturday for the USS Truxtun.  He is an EN, I am having a hard time with him leaving even worse than when he left for Boot Camp.  Please tell me it gets better.  How long will it be before we hear from them when they leave.  Does anyone know where they will be headed?

If there are any moms/families/wives etc with Sailors attached to these ships interested in helping. We are still trying to get approval for pillowcases for each crew member. Is there anyone interested? Please PM :)

Stacie,

So sorry about your loss......my stomach dropped when I read your post.  How difficult for you and your family.  God bless and peace to you.

As for the airlines, it is my understanding and it has happened with my son that they do not charge for bags, and he has not traveled in uniform. Also, I scheduled a flight for my son at Christmas and evidently they had a limited number of "military discounts" but the woman I talked with gave it to him anyway because she was a "Navy brat"!  I would think they would definitely give one to your son.   As the others said, the USO is very helpful.  When my son got "layed over" for a night he even slept there and had free food.  They even woke him up when he needed to get going.  All the best and good luck with the arrangements.

The USO will be a good support.  They have a number of amenities.  If someone can give them a heads up that he is travelling under compassionate leave, they will often give a lot of TLC including help with connections, etc.  My prayers go out to you and your family.
