Has anyone heard any scuttlebutt about Homecoming plans?
here is a link to fb page for harpers ferry if you all are interested
there are 320 sailors and about 380 marines onboard and my son said first liberty on or about the 19th of sept talking to him on fb now
AZKmom - that is amazing to think you've walked around in the ship and that soon our families will be doing the same steps! I can't remember what I told y'all about our son- he is a cook on the small craft which goes along with USS Harpers Ferry. They left SD today to head up the coast to where they intercept with the ship and everyone else. He said he was doing ok. I think once the routine kicks in, they will all be fine.
Mary Lee....I can't answer your question about how many on the ship. The tour he gave us lasted probably 3 or 4 hours and he gave us SO many facts and details, my old brain just could not retain it all :) I loved every minute of seeing it all though. The USS New Orleans was right next to the HF so we saw that as well. My daughter was wearing a sundress and we both had big purses with us. They were not very convenient for going up and down steep ladders and through small hallways. One of my impressions of being on the ship was that it would be an advantage being short!! haha My son said he has seen very tall guys get laid out flat because they didn't duck at the right time. I am very short and clunked my head once going up a ladder to the next level. He was so proud of his ship and that he could show it to all of us.
I just had a last Skype with my son. He was spending his last night in a hotel room ordering pizza to be delivered. We shared a beer together via Skype :) He was in very good spirits....almost excited to get underway. He said it would be about 50 days before they got to their first port. He also said he thought that after 45 days at sea they would be rewarded with 2 beers!! haha It was good seeing his face one more time and I feel at peace with his leaving. It means I can begin the countdown to a trip to SD for their homecoming. I am a runner and I pray for my son and his shipmates and all our military when I am on a run. God's blessings to you all for peace and comfort during these next long months.
thank you radical!! I went over and requested to join, I think I did that right? it's really uplifting having other parents sharing this experience, not having to go thru it alone -
God bless our family of military men and women
