Car Registration New York

Hello.  Crazy weeks.  I haven't been able to get back on here to the safe haven.

My sailor from Florida bought a car less than a month before moving to NY from Goose Creek Power School. South Carolina does not send out final paperwork from purchasing a vehicle for 4-5 weeks.  To register the vehicle in SC one must have a local address which would have been the barracks.

To change address with US Postal Service the address can not be a business address.  The barracks military address is considered business address, so he can't forward his mailing address and is no longer there to check for deliveries since booted from the barracks before graduation.  Who would he contact at Goosecreek for mail delivered after leaving and his new address to forward to?

Once in Prototype there is not the ability to handle business hour affairs.  NY requires registration within 10 days of relocation.  Vehicle can not be registered by NY DMV with out the title nor can the plates be changed with out the permanent registration or tag and now his temporary tag and temporary registration are expired.

Who can help a sailor get their vehicle with registration matters in New York?

I am so grateful for this group and especially the experienced wisdom and stories of those veteran members whose sailors may have moved well beyond the pipeline too.

Hello NNPMom! I will start off by saying, I had all the best intentions when it came to registering my son‘s car because I can be a bit of a rule follower like that, but that’s me and I’m dealing with a, at the time 19-year-old in the throes of the nuclear pipeline. I gave him my previous car while he was still in high school, and my name was on the title and registration. When he left basic and went to GC we drove his car out to him still with his Home state plates and registration. This might be unpopular but after talking to his recruiters and reading other information, we did the best we could. We were not in GC and could not force him to go do the things that “should” have been done. I had all the information for him and could lead him to the water, but at the end of the day it was up to him to see it through. Needless to say, this did not happen while he was in GC. He attempted a couple times to go to the office they directed him to and they were either closed or out to lunch and that was that, his patience ran out. During one of his home visits, I had him added to the registration so that it could make things a little easier if there were any issues. The registration renewals still came to me and I took care of them and got the sticker added to the plate after he moved to NY. Tried once again to get him to go do the thing that needed to be done since he was going to be there for six months. It didn’t happen and the world did not spin off its axis like I had envisioned it would. I’m not saying it’s ideal or even recommending it. Just sharing our experience. My priorities were different than my sailors to say the least and I had to pick my battles. I did what I could from here and the rest was up to him. When he finished prototype, the car once again came back to his home state and is now at his DS. We were anticipating him not even needing a car because he wasn’t supposed to be on land lol. I have considered on another visit getting all of it transferred over and sorted. Doing the admin work myself so to speak. We shall see. This Momma can do a lot but getting my grown man, sailor to do things that aren’t his priority prove difficult these days. Again, I am not condoning or recommending any of these methods. Just sharing my personal experience. This is one of those things I’ve had to reach deep down and find my “Semper Gumby” (Be Safe, Love Mom) because my hands are tied. I cannot force the horse to drink even after leading him to the water. I’m certain this is not helpful and for that I apologize. I hope you have better luck than me!!

*Note: unfortunately, every experience we had with the mail situation in GC was unfavorable, so I have no recommendations there because we hit a dead end at every turn. We ended up leaving everything tied to his address here in his home state. I wish I had better news there or at least something useful. Again, I apologize and wish you all the luck!!

Momof1 thank you for giving me a chuckle that our sailors will still sail their own course despite the buoys we put out for them to follow.  The unneeded frustration they put upon themselves and us with worry by not following the seemingly silly checklists.  I tried to remind him today to complete the moving checklist put out on the mil site to make sure all i's are dotted and t's crossed despite already being up there so he doesn't cause himself more frustration.

NNPMom - I have no insights, but I wanted to tell you that I feel your pain!  :-)  We are in NC, so when my son was at GC, we had no issues because his permanent address is NC and we left everything registered in his home state.  But, just recently, he bought a used car in CT, and we went together to the DMV to register it in NC.  My son bought the car in CT, the title was registered in GA, and the bill of sale was listed as NY.  I just have to give a shout-out to the lady at the DMV - Thank God she is the mom to two military kids!  The whole situation seemed a bit shady to me and her, but the angel at the DMV figured it all out and gave us an NC title!  She told me she dealt with similar issues with her military kids.  :-)
