Deployment homecoming dates have been shifted because spouses posted the date too often on FB!   Not precisely an extension, but I can imagine what an uproar that caused.

Deployments lengths can vary depending on where they are home ported. Japan is forward deployed so their deployments are not as long but they are more frequent. East coast sailors have longer deployments but our son is in San Diego now and this deployment is a 10 month one.

There is also a domino effect to deployments, if a ship is in the yards for maintenance or repairs and due to be completed at a certain date and it's not - it will effect the rest of the fleet and may keep a ship out longer as a result.

Then their are world events that may take place that also could send a ship out sooner or leave them on deployment longer than planned.

And then with the impact on the DOD budget, we are working with less ships so everyone is doing more ...much like our civilian lives!

Does anyone know about the Navy's changes in deployment? How are they out at sea? My son's ship received orders before the changes.

Good info Tiff so many bases have long waiting list.
Comment by Tiff(Ship 11 Div 057) on January 27, 2013 at 9:00pm

I have called for base housing and my husband is going up there tomorrow or Tuesday to get our house. They dont have a waiting list right now they have several houses available. So once he does his packet and the stuff he needs to do then he goes to housing and gets the house that day or the next. Since they have houses right now then it shouldn't take but a day to get one.

Generally there is a waiting list to get base housing, any recent families at GL that can help Michelle with tat question?
Comment by Michelle on January 26, 2013 at 12:59pm

Thanks ladies! So we found out that in order for him to live ashore one of us needs to have a driver's license (which neither one of us has yet) but does anyone know if we need a driver's license in order for me and my daughter to get a house on base, without my husband living with us?
