My son is not passing his running test.  I don't even know where to write him a letter.  I am wondering what they do to help them pass, if anything.  I am worried about him getting discouraged or the training to pass.  I did talk to a veteran recently who took 3 weeks to pass his swimming...but did.  I am just sick for my son and feeling very helpless.  Any advice?

Pray.  My daughter was in fit and took a couple of weeks to pass her running.  She did get to call me once, unexpectedly and I was able to encourage her then.  I didn't find out until later that two of her friends went to FIT with her and quit after failing the first run in FIT.  I am so proud of her for not giving up, but I know it wasn't easy.  Here is what she says about the training:

Every other day we did PT in the compartment. They have treadmills and other exercise machines right there so you don't have to go anywhere. And you can expect to do watches just like before in boot camp. And when the days you're not pt training you're doing the PFA at freedom hall. Except on weekends. I believe Saturdays are different and Sundays are an off day if I remember right.

And if you fail your PFA you just go back to your compartment and jump on a machine.

I put "Forward to Fit" on all the letters I sent her, but I don't think she got a single one.

Don't be too discouraged, Karen.  It isn't the end of the world.  I know in N4M you spend a lot of time planning for and talking about PIR, and when you don't get to go, it seems like the end of the world, but it isn't.  Even if your son comes home, it will be o.k.

Thank you.  I appreciate all of your comments.  He is a strong kid and when I did talk with him, I reminded him there was a lesson here.  Take the lesson and be better for it.  Just worried a bit about him getting too discouraged.  I understand they will keep him in FIT until he passes.  Talked to a gentlement the other day that said he was there for 3 weeks, then passed.  We pray every day and everyone we know is doing the same.  I think if he comes home, he will be devastated.  I am just praying for the call. :)

hi karen. and welcome. you can write him at the same address, but add (now in fit) after the division. it will get to him! that's how I sent mine and he received them.

Thank you!!!  I will do it tomorrow!!

Just keep the faith...  you can not write until he gives you a new address.  He will earn a call usually within first week of  being sent to a new ship.  Running is hard at boot,,, the hall where they run pfa's.. there is no air circulation,, so most loose an minute and half off their run time.  Over time they will get better.  If you have more questions just ask,, we are here for each other.

If he is determined to stay, he will make it.  My daughter added this to her information after I posted yesterday:

"You more or less just have to not let yourself psych yourself out. Which was always my problem. Unless there's something physically wrong with you, anyone can pass that pfa."

Let us know when you get that call.

Hi,

My  son called Aug 27th as well saying he was 5 seconds short of his running.  We've not heard from him since.  He said he had a bad cold and cough but didn't want to go to dr.  So thankful to hear something about what is going on.  Thanks for the info.

Haven't posted in a while.  Just discouraged and sick for my son.  Did hear from him last Thursday. He still isn't passing, but he had shaved a bunch off of his time.  Gave him some encouragement, told him we loved him and to keep going until he passed.  The Navy has been relentless in going after names for security clearance.  They have talked to everyone we know and had him call last week for more names - geez.  He is only 19 and has only worked a couple of jobs.  Anyone else been through this?  He is a good kid, never done drugs, doesn't drink or been in trouble.....

It is now Wednesday am and I still have not heard from him.  I have heard that they will keep him until he passes, once he is in the Navy, then it is 3 strikes you are out.  I just hope he passes this week.  It is his 3rd week in.  I just want him to move forward.  I know this is killing him more than it is killing me.  Hope you all have had wonderful calls and your kids are on their way!  Blessings.

Did you get an address? It was on one of the websites (battleship & pfa ) forums.  If you haven't found it,  I will try to look for you. Definitely write him as much as possible.  our son called  to state that he passed the pfa last Friday and tonight as well for  b s.  Don't give up hope.

My son finally called this afternoon!!! He passed his running by 1 second!  He was there 4 weeks.  What a beating for Mom!  Especially knowing the mental beating he was giving himself.   So relieved.  I have been so frustrated for him.  Lots of people praying though.  Whew!  He is Advanced IT and will be going to Pensicola for A school.  Waiting to get shipped out.  The pride in his voice was so awesome to hear.  He can't wait for me to send him his iphone!  LOL!

Thank you for all of your support.  I haven't posted much, I have been so stressed for him.  Just appreciate all the posts from you other Moms.  Some days just reading them helped.

Best of luck to you and your recruits!

Congrats Karen and SR.  It is hard not getting a PIR for moms and sailors, too.  But those of us that have walked this other path have to celebrate the fact that our kids stuck with it.  If they choose, they can basically walk away anytime in FIT, so when your kid toughs it out, keeps working at it when everyone else has moved on, you know that they are really special.  I guess you still have to wait for the "I'm a Sailor" call, but once he has made it through FIT, that is nothing.  Enjoy.  You've earned it.

My daughter just got sent to FIT today.  I know she is disappointed but she seems to be hanging tough.  She says it will be that much more $ in the bank and leave on the books when she hits A school.  I just want to be as supportive as I can for her.
