Thank you very much and yes, that is absolutely true. We talk or text almost daily now and Skype sometimes as well. I am enjoying it while I can! Since your son will stay in Great Lakes for A-School, you will be able to enjoy all of PIR weekend with him as well. You will have half of Friday after he moves across the street from BC, then you should have Saturday and Sunday each from around 7:00 AM - 9:30 PM (these times vary). PIR is amazing and BC really does go by quickly even though it will seem like an eternity at first. :)
Congrats to you and your son! How is he liking A school? I read someplace that once they are at their A school you get more contact with them. Do you find that to be true?
jlpmom3: Welcome and I hope you find a lot of support here! This site is wonderful and while your son is in BC, this will be your lifeline... :) You still have some time to prepare which is great! Once your son leaves for BC and their Divisions are decided, you will have a PIR Group to join where you can connect with other moms who have loved ones in BC with your son. We are here for you so just let us know if you have any questions! My son recently graduated BC and is now in GM A-School in Great Lakes. Great to have you in the group!
Hello GM moms. Im new here. My boy leaves April 30th for BC and is contracted as a GM. Im trying to find the right group (support system) for myself. It's a bit overwhelming, all the info and so many groups out there.
Thanks for having me!
Good afternoon, all!
Reading about GM A school bound sailors - I was there just one short year ago. A school lets them have computers and phones so we were in contact everyday, even if it was a quick text. The one thing my sailor girl noticed was that many A school students get a bit "chunky monkey" after the regimen of boot camp, since working out now happens on their own. Fortunately, their is a gym and running track and field close by the 'ship' (but also fast food, so it can be a toss up).
Just checking in on everyone this morning and hoping you are all doing well! Does anyone have a Sailor that has recently started A-school in GL?
momm2five: I hope your morning is going well! I know seeing your son swear in and saying goodbye will be a very emotional time for you... but know that we are all here for you and if there is anything you need just let us know. This site will be your lifeline for the next 9 weeks! I also am a mother of 5 and my second oldest is my son that joined the Navy. It has been quite a ride so far!
Boot Camp will go much quicker than you think it will... you will get a few phone calls while they are there so watch your group discussions for your PIR Date and your Ship/Division Group once all of that is known - then you can see when the calls should start coming. Write letters as often as you can. I wrote to my son every day because when we received his first phone call from actual Boot Camp (which was a Saturday), he said that they had just started receiving mail on Thursday and he received my letter, but he didn't receive a letter on Friday and that bummed him out SO he just read my first letter over again! That of course made me cry my eyes out so I decided to make sure he would have a letter every day when mail was called. Our letters keep them going and give them something to look forward to every day. I also would occasionally include a photo collage. This is really easy to do in Word and allows you to include several photos on one sheet of paper and is much easier than trying to send actual photos to them and also takes up less space when they have to store them.
If your SR is staying in GL after PIR for A-school, then you will have all weekend with him. After PIR he will need about 3 hours to transfer to his new room on the Navy Base accross the street from the RTC. Then you can pick him up at the Visitor's Center usually around 3:00/3:30 PM and you will have until around 9:30 PM to spend with him that Friday before returning him to Base. It is different for every "Ship" but we were able to pick our son up again Saturday Morning at 6:00 AM and had all day again until 9:30 PM - the same for Sunday except we had to fly out and weren't able to spend that day with him. If you can arrange for it, I would take as much time as you can and spend the whole weekend there. PIR is an unexplainable experience and I am so excited for those of you who will be there before you know it!!
Sorry for the long response but I hope this info helps you with your plans and expectations. I really needed to know all that I could when I first started this journey and I was an emotional mess! :)
Hi Christina! My son left for RTC today. We go see him swear in at MEPS tomorrow morning. I'm glad he will be staying in GL for A school. Looking forward to PIR. I'm hoping these next 9 weeks go fast!
