I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

evansgirl welcome,  when is his PIR?  If you are able to make it there you can attend PIR and he may have sometime to spend with you that weekend.  GM school is also at Great Lakes so he will be there foir awhile.  Given the time with boot and A school he may get leave at Christmas but, this depends on how things go.  If you haven't done so already join the groups for boot camp and his PIR, I found these groups very helpful when my son was in boot, you can get a lot info there.  Be prepared for a change in him, it is amazing how much they grow both inside and out.  If you don't hear from him for sometime don't get upset, hang in there, it will be alright.  Boot camp is not easy and they really have to focus.

well, we wanted to go to San Diego at Thanksgiving but, it is looking more and more like they are going to be deployed.  So we have decided to stay home and work on the house, we have some wood floors that need to be refinished.

ame7 I hope your daughter is enjoying Va.  They are trying to rush my son's class through and it looks like they will be done in Sept rather than Oct.

Oaky, onto the next phase....my daughter just started VLS school on July 27 in Dam Neck.  After VLS, she is assigned to the USS Forrest Sherman in Norfolk, VA.  (So the East coast VLS/East coast assignment holds true for her.)  Although, she would have liked to see San Diego since she'll be stationed in Norfolk anyway.  She would have LOVED Hawaii, but it wasn't an option when they selected duty stations.  Like PAM said, its not what they want, but what the Navy needs.  Although there was Hawaii assignments two weeks later when the class behind her was selecting.  Just the way it happens......

Gary T, I talked to my son since my last posting and he said they sent him to Va because he could class up soon. So they must really need VSL on the St. George.

Gary T I don't know. 1st he had orders for 5" at San Diego and was to be on the USS Lake Champlain, then his orders changed to VLS at Dam Neck and then onto San Diego where he will be on the USS Cape St George. The funny thing is there are only 3 of them in his class at Dam Neck. At 1st he was upset that his orders got changed but, I reminded him it's not what he wants but, what the Navy needs. He,s ok with it now and is enjoying Va while he is there and spent 4th of July weekend in DC and seen the fireworks there. He should be done at Dam Neck in Oct, or maybe before they are trying to speed them up and get them out of C school before Oct. It makes you wounder since from what I can gather the St George is getting really to deploy again.

Thanks for the info PAM.  She is excited to hear about beach on base!  She really liked exploring Chicago when she was in GL, so she hopes to do more of that in Virginia.

ame7, my son is at Dam Neck for VLS and was to be done in Oct. But there are only 3 or 4 in the class so they are trying to speed it up and get them out to their ships. My son said he should be done sometime in Sept, and will be coming home for a week or two before going on to San Diego. Tell your daughter that there is a beach right there on base, my son loves it and spents alot time there. He doesn't go off base as much as he would like, he said cabs are very expensive out there. But, he has several friends from home that are out there and one of them has their car there.

PAM....you were lucky to see him graduate!  We visited her at GL following PIR and one other weekend in April, so we decided not to make the trip for her graduation on July 8.  She is home until she has to report to Dam Neck for VLS school on July 25.   Its so great to have her home!  I'm so proud of her.  She said she should be done C-school sometime in November, then she is stationed at Norfolk.
