I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Ashlove, while in A school they must live on ships (barracks). Once they are assigned to a post, then you can look into housing.

My finacee is in GM Aschool right now in GL. He said they told him it would take between 58-66 business days to complete it. I counted it out and it'll be about mid may for him

Pam - my son is on the Wisconsin!  He is so excited about finally starting his classes!

ashlove - I am not sure if they can live off base while in A school.  If I had to guess I would say probably not.  But that would just be a guess on my part.  I don;t think they get that choice until they get their permanent orders.

My husband's PIR is 3-11-11 and he is going to A school for GM. He moves to his new barracks the day of PIR. GM A school is 27 weeks long. We both keep getting different answers on whether he will be able to live off base with me and our son.
Does anybody have any experience with this that can help me? I just want to know what to expect.
Thank you for your help!

My daughter has been assigned to an amphibious landing ship, the USS Tortuga, based out of Sasebo, Japan.  Does anyone else here have a sailor at Sasebo or maybe even on the USS Tortuga?

Pam, my son is on hold waiting for his gunners A school to start and is also interested in the Riverines.  I am like you from what I have read and what he has told me it will make a mother worry.  Just going to be supportive and keep telling myself that I have to let him grow up and pray, lots of prayers.  I too am proud of my son and will be behind him in whatever he choses to do with his life.  What I know is that there are 2 types of Riverines.  One group stays on a river all the time and the other goes ashore to protect the marines.

My son is in A school right now at GL.  He is talking about after GM school wanting to be a Riverine and feels he has a good chance at this.  Does anyone know much about the Riverines?  I went on line and what I saw worries me.  I am very proud of him and will be very proud of anything he does in the Navy but, this is my baby.
