I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Thanks Kelly! I guess he has to get through bc first! lol My son was told that all GM's A school is in GL. I am just curious as to what he will be doing and where! lol I do understand that they specialize in either small arms or missle launchers. So I guess I will just wait and let him tell me! Thanks again.

My son graduates from bc on Oct 1. I wonder how long he will have to wait for GM school? I have read where there are some Gms that have a C school after A school. Where is that at usually???

do they have use of their cell phone in A school? I don't know whether to suspend his service or just keep it going

No, bootcamp is in a totally separate area. The waiting for school to start was the hardest thing for her. She just wants to get her orders and have her life back. She still has curfew and has liberty on weekends. Once she is assigned to her ship for her GM she will be free except for during work hours. Or at least that is what she thinks:)

kayzfam:That's great that your daughter will be in the same state, that's much closer to home. Do the GM going to A school live in the same place that they did for bc?

Patti, Cool for your son:) Congrats. My daughter should be finished with her GM school in about 3 weeks. She graduated from bootcamp April 2nd. There is no easy answer on how long it takes to leave Great Lakes. I know she is so ready to get out of there she can hardly stand it. She also hasn't gotten to come home yet because of waiting for school to start. She is getting assigned to the USS Stennis in Bremerton WA. Across the state from home:)

my son went to bc on Sept 1. Upon graduation he is going for GM. I understand he will stay in Great Lakes for A School. Can you tell me about his education and training, how long it is? What happens after A school?

Hi Guys, checking in and updating and looking for info. It has been a busy week for Brett during underway. Started the week qualing for DC. Passed. Had to qual on the M-16. He was top qualifier so he now has to coach and supervise all qualifying M-16 exercises. His Chief selected him to serve on SBS duty and his Master Chief assigned him to qualify for VBSS duty. Along with his regular duty on VLS, Brett said his head is spinning with all the added duties but finds it exciting and said it helps the time go by quicker. He said he has no time to think about being away from his wife and daughter.
Any body else have their Sailor get this kind of added duty. Seems a bit much to me. I am wondering if this is the norm. I will check in and update soon. Godspeed to our Sailors.

To the sailors who just PIR'd it does take a while to get into school. My son PIR'd Dec. 30th and was on hold for about 4 months. During that hold they take classes, they sound stupid, but they are like psycology classes but they are educating. My son is due to be finished with school in 2 more weeks till they grad from GM school. He has just received his orders, he will be able to come home for leave up to 15 days then he is being shipped off to Hawaii where he will be stationed at. Good luck to all you new Grad moms, it takes alot of patience but rewarding in the end.
