I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

I think she is going stir crazy already. She wants to get to a ship that she knows that she will be at for awhile. I think the unknown is what is hard. There are a lot of 920 sailors there with her at Great Lakes so at least she has friends to do things with. Seriously I read through this whole site and it seems some of them don't get done for almost a year. I think Taryn said her orders said that she had a graduation date of October 5th? We will see:)

Wow...2 months waiting to start school? My daughter had PIR on 4/02 and she is already getting restless to get started. So the ATT school is first? How long does that take, or is that the one that is computer taught and you just go at your own pace?
Afghanistan? Wow....May God Bless and take care of all of our Sailors!

Kayzfam - congratulations on PIR and being able to be there. We too went out a couple days early (it was over New Years weekend in 09) and just relaxed, "did Chicago" and hung out. It was a fantastic weekend after the emotional roller coaster of boot camp. Enjoy.

We are at the Ramada Waukegan now and so excited for Friday. The hotel is interesting:) I read through from page 1 like suggested on here and it seems they do the school differently now so sailors get out of Great Lakes sooner? I think for my daughter, anything but bootcamp is good with her! They still get paychecks and that makes her happy. I can't believe I am 10 minutes from base and my daughter and we can't see or talk to her until Friday:(
I can't wait to brag about PIR. Taryn is carrying our WA state flag so it will be really easy to spot her. So close and yet so far. We brought her cell phone for the weekend. I feel like calling it just to hear the familiar ring.

Our son was in GL two days shy of a year. It was too long for him but... He is happy now so this too shall pass is the name of the game.

The waiting during indoc, SCC. ATT and GM Aschool can be tough. They end up waiting for weeks for the next stage to begin. But eventually that's over and they get assigned to a unit and get to do what they trained to do. Our son was in GL for 10 months from the beginning of boot camp to the date when he shipped out to Norfolk.

My daughter should be headed to Gunners Mate A school at Great Lakes on 4/03. Since we have had 1 call, 4 weeks ago, I don't know if the grad and go after graduation allows her to spend the weekend with us? Anyone??? It's also her 22nd birthday the 4th, so I sure hope so! Letters are mostly spent talking about being sick and the run killing her:)
