Members: 212
Latest Activity: Feb 14, 2020

I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Tyler graduated A-school today. He has earned his cross cannons (sp?). We're so proud of him. He's heading to Gulfport tomorrow... of course, we're having 6-12 inches of snow and ice tomorrow and Saturday here in souther Mississippi.....isn't that great!!!!!

Tyler also got his order this AM. He is coming to Gulfport MS, attached to a Seabee Unit. He'll only be 2 hours from us. Yay...

Ashlyn, tell your husband tis nothing to be ashamed of, nor to let him worry. I am sorry if this had been a dream of his, to go in the Navy and now have this to hinder. Sometimes we have to realize the hard way that things happen for our best in ways we do not understand until MUCH further down the road. As upsetting as it may be at the time...Sounds like you both have very positive thoughts (am glad for you on that) and it must be necessary. Perhaps he is needed more at home at the moment, and "someone" else knew that, making it come true....whichever case, we are all still very proud of what he has accomplished and done, he will always be "Navy" in our eyes...take care, and let us know if we can still be of any help sometime.

Welcome Ashlyn! Congrats to your husband! There is much to learn, and never a dull moment for sure. Just remember that all is constantly changing, and never the same for any 2 sailors, but ask away, and you will get alot of answers! Nothing is set in stone, and you will learn the 'hurry and wait' rulings! Ride the coaster rides, and know you have tons of support from others going thru similiar things. Keep in contact with others in his division, and those within his rate. Soon, you, too will be the pro one and helping others! There are groups for BC grad dates, wives, by jobs (as this one), by ship, and just about anything you could think of! I've had 2 in GM for over a year and a half and still learn alot, so you will gain so much info all the time! Again, welcome in!

Congratulations, Darcy. Getting A school done is a big step cause it signals the end of life in a training command and the beginning of life in an operational command. The pace picks up from here on out. :)

Juneball - GMs can be assigned to a very wide variety of different types of duty. If they're assigned to a (my words) "big gray ship", they will home port where their ship is and deploy with the battle group or unit of ships their ship is assigned to and be very unlikely to be on the ground. There are, however, many commands they can be assigned to that don't involve large vessels. Check this link: http://www.necc.navy.mil/. Navy Expeditionary Combat Command is an umbrella command that includes SeaBees (construction battalions), EOD, MSRON (maritime expeditionary security forces...providing security along unsecured coastlines, oil platforms, escorting large ships while they're close to shore and in foreign harbors (remember the USS Cole incident)...they have the Divers and other groups too. Gunners mates can be assigned to many of these teams. My son is a GM on a MSRON boat team on small patrol boats. It's very interesting work, very different from large ships. Many of these units do deploy to Kuwait and the Persian Gulf area.

Tyler PIR'd on 08-07-09. 18 days hold, INDOC, 10 days hold, SCC, 6 days hold, ATT, 10 days hold, A-school. He hasn't too much hold at all.
