I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Patty, sure hope you and your sailor, and all the family have a really great time while he is back! Savor any little moment, sure goes by all too quickly. Yep, I agree, they do secretly like things but hate to let us know that! (So cute, a little bear named for him!) I had done a similiar theme myself for mine!
BTW, I had 2 go through GM rate last summer, and from PIR to graduation of A school took only 5 and a half months. That included indoc, SCC, ATT and A school. They had those computerized courses then, learn at your own pace. I homeschooled my boys, and it is all self-paced base classes, therefore, they had a strong feel for studying that way. Worked good for them. They surpassed many others that classed up with them. I dont think either of them had a longer wait in-between greater than about 5 days, so they were lucky. Even went through at the same time. Many things to consider, and can change an outcome, so all timing needs be taken with a grain of salt. And can last longer or go quicker, all things considered.

Tyler just classed up to SCC. Has indoc on Wed. and class starts on Thurs. We're finally moving along.

Sounds like Dan got his orders last night; sorting them out now. We expect him home in a week or so, then heads out for more training. He's a happy Sailor again.

Robin in Florida...if you are not a member of the Great Lakes A School Q&A group, you might want to join it. I have started a discussion in the FORUM just for GM moms and Moms and Dads have posted their experiences with their sailors from BC through A school. You will get many answers there...and it will give you a good perspective of the hold times, etc.

Robyn - I'm surprised to hear that his orders came thru but he doesn't leave until October. When did he finish A school? Glen

Kim and other new Moms and Dads - welcome to the GM group! I've enjoyed hanging out in this crowd since our son finished boot camp and start the sequence of courses leading to A school. He's finished now and waiting for his orders. Still at Great Lakes and very ready to be moving on. You'll find this info in various places...but after boot camp they do Indoc for a week or so, then SCC (surface combat core), then ATT (advanced technical training and finally the actual A school curriculum. Between each of those are waits of anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks. They quickly learn who has a car, how to take the train into the city, where to go in Chicago to hang out, etc. Danny's been out there since 4 November - he's quite ready to get on with his next assignment! My son got verbal orders then hard orders about two weeks later. The day he got hard orders he knew his leave dates.

Thanks for the info. Tyler knew about some of this. I was just curious. Wanted to be sure he wouldn't be sitting in compartment and moping around. You know how Moms are!!!

Bill - did your son get his hard orders yet...and his scheduled leave? Danny got some sort of verbal info on 7/30, finished A school on 7/31 and his orders still aren't posted. We're holding off on any vacation schedules until he gets orders and leave and we're in limbo. (whine whine).

If he's at Great Lakes, there's a huge rec area which I'm sure he would know about. They have video games, pool tables, ping pong, music listening rooms, movie rooms, snack bar, pinball machines, etc etc. There's also the USO facility near the main entrance that has snacks and things for sailors to do. Also a beach of sorts on-base with volleyball nets.
