I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Debbie, I went up about 3 wk ago for my sons grad, it is nothing like PIR, but was wonderful to see. Not only GM's grad that day, but several rates. Only a handful graduating, and lasted only about 30min. They stand in a group in a small room, and I was the only parent there. They allowed me to take photos, and everyone was so nice. (Well, was once I could get on base! I STRONGLY recommend getting there early the day before and get a pass early. I was not able have my boys meet me the morning of grad, and I HAD to have them or CO sponsor me on base. I was fortunate to have one of the other CO's stop by the visitor center and allow me on, 30 min prior to grad! I just made it to the GM hall for grad by 10min!) At the end of the 'ceremony', their CO gave me a certificate of appreciation and dedication and support for the Navy, it was shocking! I was surprised, it was so sweet of them. So, I recommend going if you are able.

Susie, I haven't heard anything like that but it would sure be nice. I know Matt goes on and checks pay and leave,etc... It is called a LES leave and earnings statement. We do not have access to that. But I can ask him if he was charged. This morning it was the same as yesterday. They called thirty people over for ATT. This time only two of them classed up. I wonder if he will do this every day until he gets in a class. Very Interesting. Emotions are up and down and all over the place.

My son is meeting us tonight at the Tap House Grill, 6010 S. Cass, Westmont. It's about an hour from base. The Chicago Moms are meeting for dinner at 5:00, but my son wants to come. If any of yours is in the area and you can get a message to them, tell them to come!

OK, here's the latest update. You never know day to day. Matt texted me "I was supposed to start ATT today" I said "But" He was out with a work party and got a call he was supposed to start class. Went backl to the ship changed and went to the ATT building. When he got there there were thirty people waiting. To make a long story short they took only four. I asked him if they said when the next class begins and he said no. So...... back to the work party for him. I had never heard him use that word either. He said they send you out in a group to another building to do whatever they need help with. He has been at the GM school the last two days moving desks, etc....

I assum they go in order but you can never tell. My son's PIR was 11-14 and he continues to be on hold for ATT. He has been on hold been since finishing SCC on Jan 5th. Was told this week it could be another month, but you never know they could tell him he is starting tomorrow.

Hobbits Mom, it depends on the time they have built up, where they are going to, and a few other factors. But chances are, they can have some time off in between. They will be given their vouchers to go to their next duty station, but if they go anywhere else, it is up to them to pay the difference. My sailors took a bit of time off, and it was good for them, more for me! So I hope your sailor gets the opportunity too! Good Luck!

I'll see if I can get more info about exactly where he's going to be instructing at GL. when we were in Norfolk at the NEX, he bought a couple things and told me he'd actually have an office and a desk, but then he talks about his shop, too. He won't report for duty till later this week. I don't press for too much information at one time--he shares what he wants to. I'm sure we'll end up with a tour eventually because he's pretty pumped and proud.

He's home again today to have his truck checked out, deal with taxes and his ex-wife, and haul furniture back. I am delighted he's home though I haven't seen him much today. I know he visited the recruiting office, too.

Patty, My son is in the Farrugat as well. He is awaiting ATT. Is that the class your son is starting. Your son graduated two weeks before mine. Do you know what floor your son is on. Mine is on the third. His internet doesn't work at all. :(

One of my friends has a Marine son who told me that he trusts his back to his fellow Marines, but never his stuff! Great that Michael got a check from United! I am surprised, too. I still hope they find the bag. I wish the bag could talk--wouldn't it be interesting to find out it's adventures?!

My GM son officially checks in to GL as an instructor later this week. I don't know if they send sailors to GL if they get in trouble, but he wasn't sent there because of that. :)
