I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Yes, those are his girls. They are almost 7 and 4--the younger one is so petite that she's just starting to wear something bigger than a 2! I have to post some pictures from Christmas that we had with them just last weekend. Dave is right--Andy did a lot of security on the ship, but when he was in Afgh. he did more small arms. He was in charge of an armory first, then instructed the Afgh soldiers how to care for their weapons. All I know about his new duty is that he will be an instructor--he says he'll teach the new recruits which end of the gun to point, but I don't know what he'll REALLY be doing.

When he was married we hoped he'd "see the world" with his family and we'd go visit him--Virginia, Florida, California, Hawaii, Italy and Spain. That didn't last long! Now that his little girls live in our area, we're loving it that he'll be at Great Lakes. Those girls adore him and are so excited that daddy will be living just "two movies" away. Did you know that after a time in the Navy that a GM can put in for duty almost anywhere there's a military installation and an opening? He didn't have enough rank to get Rock Island Arsenal (there was an opening recently), but he put in for Tucson (Davis Monthan AF Base) and Corpus Christi as other choices.

Robyn, did Michael's bag ever show up?

I drove to Zion, IL, yesterday north of GL. We're starting to get excited. I signed the apt papers for Andy, and we'll be driving to Norfolk to help him move his stuff at the end of the month. He could probably handle the move alone, but we needed an excuse to visit Norfolk/Virginia Beach in January! Zion, at least where his apt is, feels more like country than Chicago, but it's on the train line so we can visit Milwaukee or Chicago without driving.

Thanks for asking! I think my son is doing well. He's staying with the retired chaplain and wife in Virginia Beach and enjoyed Christmas very much. One of the things he did for them was wash and wax their car as a present! He likes detailing cars. I finally connected with a female sailor from home that I know, that's stationed in Washington DC, and they've now talked. I'm not hoping romance! LOL though it would be ok....her sister has gone to visit her and they invited him to WDC for the weekend. Next week will be better when he actually starts school. He's asked me to go look at his apt near Great Lakes, so the time till he's in Illinois will be here soon.

I think the bag will turn up yet, but there's no excuse for this! I talked to my son today about United's response to him missing his flight. My son says his flight had a delayed take off from Norfolk. When they landed in Chicago, the plane was directed to one gate, then to another where they had to wait for the ground crew. By the time he was allowed off the plane, it was 7:35 instead of 7:10. He had to switch from terminal C to terminal F. He says the staff on the ground was not helpful or friendly. He arrived at his gate as quickly as possible and the doors were closed. We realize this is a stressful time of year, by it was December 11, not Christmas week. I just wish someone at United would take responsiblity! I could live with that and a sincere apology, but saying that the plane was only two minutes late is just not true! Robyn, keep at them. I assume you've got a baggage claim number, so I'd start asking for supervisors and keep going up their chain of command!

I received an email today from United. They say the plane was not late [except two minutes] that caused my son to miss his next flight. I'm checking with my son later. They sent a $25 voucher. The response was from customer.relations@united.com

I'm going to add a blog to my page that's parts of an email from my cousin who got stuck at O'Hare for a time. Part of it is funny, part of it is wonderful because she witnessed a few people volunteer to give up their seats to our military so they could get home. And her experiene with some United employees was really good--but she's a minister and has a way about her!

God bless John and Yvonne, here on Navy for Moms! They have taken our son in, and especially over the holidays, it is an extra blessing. They even sent us pictures of him in action in the kitchen making cookies on Christmas Eve. So as you remember to give thanks this Christmas, add a prayer for special people like the Wagners who care for our sailors.

I sent my email to United at two different addresses, so I don't know which one worked. Here's the message I got this morning in case someone wants to sit on the phone!

Thank you for your message. You may expect a reply between 2 - 3
business days.
If you need immediate attention, please call our toll free number at
(800) 756-1000 and select the appropriate option. You will be connected, on a priority basis, with one of our most experienced agents.
Thank you for your business and for choosing United Airlines.

Check with your home owners insurance. Mine covered a bag I had stolen--minus the deductible. I just received an email that United had received the message I sent two days ago. The message said I'd receive a response in 2-3 days. I think "customer service" is a misnomer!
