I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

The airline should be delivering that seabag!

Can you check the flight status on the airline website? If he gets stuck at O'Hare, tell him to go to the USO.

What a gorgeous smile! I'm so glad he got home without too much delay. When Andy flew into Chicago last Thursday night, they made sure he missed his flight! They came in 25 minutes late (no weather problems then either) and by the time he got to another terminal, his plane was leaving. United told him they couldn't put him on another airline flight even though there were others coming in here. No meal vouchers, no hotel--United said it wasn't their problem. grrr. I have a special place in my heart for the USO! At least they let him sleep on a couch there. He's in Norfolk again now.

Anyway, hooray for your good news! Make him let you hug him again for every Navy mom missing a sailor, too. Andy rolled his eyes, but he let me...he he

Don't you love it when they come home and iron! ;)

Joyce, did your son get out of Chicago? I'm thinking he didn't, but hopefully, he will be on his way to your waiting arms soon! The sun is shining here now so this weather will be in Chicago shortly. It's cold, but no wind. I just went out and cleared off my van (hasn't seen the inside of the garage for years!). There was a think layer of ice, then snow on top of that, then another crust of ice. It's thick enough that you can walk on the crust--probably four inches deep on my drive and sidewalks. My husband is imitating Tiny Tim or House with a cane these days, so I hired a guy who comes whenever it snows. Cheaper than buying a new snow blower and a lot warmer for us!

Susie, thank you! Good news--my son will have a place to stay--details later when I know more. Karen's son called last night! That's the Christmas miracle, I think. I'm so happy for her.

OK, it's in good hands now! I'll be waiting to hear good news.

I should have added, I think all the recruiting offices are closing tomorrow, so you might have to go visit them after the first of the year. Those recruiters do love moms! I used to feel I might be bothering them, but now I know they really do like us to stop in even without cookies.

If you don't have any luck with the chaplain (but I'm sure you will), let me know. If you're able, make some cookies and visit the recruiting offices in your area. I've made some good connections with all branches just because they know my husband and I support them. They all greet me with "Hey, Mom, what's up?" I took cookies to the Navy yesterday, and the recruiter slipped two tickets to me--he won tickets for Dancing with the Stars, but will be in Washington, DC for his award as Recruiter of the Year and to re-enlist. And he gave me the tickets! I feel so humble (ok, truthfully, excited too!).

Karen, I don't know if you want to, but I'm sure there's a way to find out about him. Do you have any connection with a recruiter or someone like that? These women who mess with our sons! Go read my divorced sailors group discussion--we have stories! I don't mean to minimize your situation--I'm just saying we would understand. How about contacting a chaplain at Ft. Riley? I'll pray, too.

Two other topics--I visited my congressman's office yesterday. Things are looking up. My son should have been awarded a purple heart and a combat ribbon and the Army Lt. didn't follow through in Afghanistan. They are going to do an investigation. My biggest fear was my son getting in trouble--chain of command and all that. He talked to a Navy Chief yesterday who told him that he's not an IA anymore with the Army so he can keep pursuing them. He followed the rules there, but made this Lt. mad who wanted him to break them.

Next topic--do any of you have a sailor living in Norfolk or around there? My son needs a place to live till January 27 when he's assigned to Great Lakes. He says he'll even pay to sleep on a couch while he's there. His ship is deployed, so he doesn't know any sailors there nor have that option for a rack.

Robyn, He's trying to be a man and distancing himself. HOWEVER, he will be back! For awhile, my son was even somewhat ugly to me--I would hang up on him. Then he seemed to grow up, he apologized, and told me he couldn't do anything without my support. Now when I can visit him on a base, he takes me to the NEX and says "Is an hour long enough?" It's the same in someways for my daughter when she went to college--you know, mom was stupid, but the older my daughter gets, the wiser I get in her eyes! Now they are both adults and mom and dad are pretty good in their eyes. So hang in there because it will get better with time!
