I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Seems to me my son did a lot of cleaning and standing watch while waiting for his next school or duty. They keep them busy.

Texting works - calls just don't! Never good reception from the BEQs - Our son called twice tonight from the train station...best reception we have had in six months!

I think Andy played phone tag with Bryan and Chad and never did catch up with them or them with him. He didn't see everyone he wanted to while he was home either. It was a great leave for him and us. His little girls hung all over him--the last day he was home he went to school in uniform and had lunch with his 1st grader. She was thrilled! The girls are with us this weekend and understand that daddy had to go back and fight the bad guys. He'll be in the States for Christmas--we don't know where, nor do we care, as long as he's in the USA!

Since my son is home on leave, he decided to go to GL to investigate apartments when he gets back from Afgh. after the first of the year. He left on Thursday, and I followed on Friday with his two girls.

I actually got to go shopping at the NEX. To do that, you have to have your sailor with you for his ID and bring cash to cover what you want. I got a new Navy mom car sticker, thermo cup, and the girls got little sailor hats and teddy bears.

In case you ever need a hotel, the Residence Inn at Lake Forest is really nice. Andy got a suite (regular $189) for $79 a night military rate; the regular room rate for AAA is $90. There's little difference in the two rooms except that the suite has a wall and door separating the bedroom from living room area with a sofa bed. There's a full kitchen with both, but a huge full breakfast every morning in the lobby. The little girls turned into Ariels with hours in the pool and we celebrated daddy's birthday at Chuck E. Cheese.

He's trying to connect with Chad and Bryan before he leaves today. Yesterday I had to come home with the girls, but he stayed to check out those potential apartments.

My son will be stationed at Great Lakes sometime early spring as a small arms instructor, not a GM instructor even though that's his designation. He's on leave right now, then back to Afghanistan for a few more months, I think. Everything is very vague, probably for good reason.

My son, the GM, arrived this afternoon after a week's journey from Afghanistan via Kuwait, Germany, and Dallas to Moline. He looks so good! He has to go back the end of the month for a few more months, but then he'll be at Great Lakes as an instructor. He laughs as he says he's going to teach recruits which end of the weapon to point.

I'm going to be at GL this weekend if anyone needs a mom hug. I'll just set up a both at Gurnee Mills on Saturday!

His cell phone signal will be...just as bad in his new building (sorry to say!) He could be moving and starting ATT as early as Thursday.
Comment by Mary, Proud Mom of Nick on September 11, 2008 at 4:04pm
ATT means apprentice technical training. It is a self-paced program that is held during the day hours and voluntary classes are available in the evenings.

They will often move to a new ship for housing when they start the ATT classes.

Tell your sons and daughters to hang in there! They will be doing such important work to keep everyone else safe. My son will be home next week on leave, and we're planning on going to GL on the weekend as he is getting ready to be stationed there soon.
