I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

I should add to all of you, the best advice is to tell your sailor to establish a relationship with his/her detailer. If they don't know what I'm talking about, tell them they need to get their behinds in gear. Moms can't do it all! Having a good relationship with a recruiter is also valuable. Andy's recruiter is now on a ship out of San Diego, but still helps him. He sent him job announcements and good advice for getting the next duty.

Stuff like that happens all the time sadly. A friend's Marine son says he'd trust his life to his Marines, but not his stuff. Our son came back from duty one evening to find a new lock on his door. (He's working with the Army overseas.) The MP's couldn't do anything if nothing was stolen, and he told them he couldn't even get in his room to know. Someone with more rank from the Army went with him to the shop to find out who signed out the bolt cutters--bogus name. So the soldier cut off the lock for him. Nothing stolen that he could find, but he's had things stolen over the almost five years, including his car "borrowed."

No guarantees Joyce, but indoc and SCC are basic Navy training classes for all sailors so I would like to say if they have been completed at another command - he should be able to roll right into ATT.

Hi Ladies, when they do their PIR and move over for A school, they first do a week of indoc and then move into SCC (basic seamanship classes) these often seem to be held from 3 pm to midnight. Sometimes there is a hold which is usually less than a week before the SCC classes begin. When the SCC class is complete they go to ATT which is advance technical training program and it is a self-paced computer driven class. When that is over with...they actually get to start their A school at that time!

Also when they complete SCC and move over to ATT, they usually move into new housing as well.

Typically they don't have classes during Christmas week.

Most parents do not attend, they shake their hands and give them a certificate of completion. Nothing like a PIR! But that doesn't mean you cannot attend, these graduation are often less than 30 minutes long.

If your son is in a self-paced class, it can be hard to pin point the exact graduation date. Some will finish sooner - some later

Do not waste your money sending packages overnight!!! The mail delivery system is a tad different on this side of the base and anyone that has sent overnight packages find it is three or four days before it reaches their sailor. Promise!

They will receive liberty this weekend - for many it started last night. However they will probably have duty one of those days. But they so will appreciate this weekend after the regiment of boot camp!

Hey ladies, I've been talking to a couple of the GM moms so thought I would stop by and see how you are.

I did post the job description for GM in the school and education forum for your review. It states that A school is 115 days long in GL.

Our son is in the AE/CF program as an FC and he is currently in A school and called last night and said that there are ETs, ICs, FCs and GMs in the class.

It is self-paced computerized program and each rate has a target completion date. Some will finish a few days earlier, some a few days later. They do report to class Mon-Friday, missing class is not an option.

Also if your sons are just settling in and have not started class yet, there are a couple of classes that they go thru first. Indoc takes about a week and then SCC is basic seamanship that all sailors go thru. These take place before they begin the actual "A" class. Hopes this helps some - good luck to each of them!
