So, the post below me answered a few questions but I am wondering if someone can tell me if there is a place my son and I can stay on base for a weekend? I know there are hotels nearby just looking for other options.
Also, where is the nearest airport that we can fly in to?
Thank you for your help! We are eager to visit!

Hey Sub School Chief since your giving a break down of SECF ....my son is ET/COMM (radioman) what their job ? :)
Comment by grotonsailor on February 18, 2010 at 12:09pm
Melodie, if your son was told he will be changing rates he will become either an ET-nav, Sonar Tech, or Fire Tech. This happens because the class ups for those rates happen more often and in greater numbers at the moment. If they have 60 guys waiting for class up and they need all 60, they will change rates on those who would otherwise be radiomen. Just because they are told early on what their rate might be, that doesnt always hold true throughout the entire pipeline of training.

there are no sub schools in Great Lakes. I was told I would be going to Great Lakes for A school after BESS but that is not the case for any rate!

SubSchoolChief - you'd be surprised how widespread the bogus word is about MM-Aux school being at Great Lakes. There were a number of people on here a few months back that had been told that, both by recruiters, and also by RDCs (apparently) at Great Lakes. It's good to see someone from SubSchool staff keeping tabs on this site as closely as you are.

I just joined this site to help out with anything I can. Questions about anything regarding subschool, orders, leave, liberty, and anything else will be answered as fully as I can. I have been stationed in Groton for quite a while so I can provide some information to all of you who have loved ones just arriving.

My son isnt a grad and go, so I dont guess we will have that option to hang out with him until he leaves. I am just glad that we will get liberty weekend with him. Thanks for the info Debbie!

I agree, yeah mine was Honor Recruit and is standing out in everything. I thinking having the partying and stuff behind them helps a ton.

Stormy - Thanks for all the info. He's 27 so he behaves and does what he's told.
