Hello everyone, lots of great updates today! Lisa, I'm very sorry to hear what you and your son are dealing with and as said before, he'll have lots of support. My husband and I have had a great time talking with our son on Skype (internet video call) on his laptop. We talked last Saturday and there were guys coming and going, they had PS3 games and pizza.

Blueat40 - a couple of thoughts. First, your son can rent a personal mailbox at the NEX. About $8/month, available for use immediately and secure. Second, they can get Comcast in their rooms and that means email access (there are also common areas in the barracks with wireless internet available). My son is really enjoying his experience, they all seem to be having a great time (a lot like going to college).

I don't remember if it's yellow then blue or blue then yellow? Either way, they're earned by sailors and with the card come priveledges such as wearing civies, personal items in their rooms and time off base. That's a quick answer that I'm sure someone will be able to follow-up on with much more detail - hope it helps!

Hi!
I was wondering if anyone has a loved one that is a machinist mate?
My husband was told he will b going to groton for sub school.
Does anyone know how long the school is?
And if our 2 baby boys and I can go with my husband to Groton?
My hubby is graduating from basic the 29th of this month.
So I have NO idea what is going on with his school and if we can go with him.
I HOPE soooooo much that we can.. I miss my husband like CRAZY!
Thanks so much
Any info will help me:)

Not ridiculous, but possibly unnecessary. The airport in Providence is an hour the other side of Groton from Hartford. The Navy runs a regular shuttle between the airport (Providence only) and the base about eighteen hours a day. On the other hand, an extra two hours of driving for the benefit of your kid isn't too bad.

Lynn joe, my son's name is Sam. I think that our boys were in bootcamp together - graduated on Dec. 5th. I have asked Sam if he knows a Geoff but he only knows last names.

Thanks Mark for the info! We debated getting our son his car, but decided that the effort of getting it to him from CA (especially this time of year) was too much so at least for now he's hitching rides wherever possible. It's good to know the Nay will help him with his stuff. I've seen his room from our conversations on Skype and wonder how the three of them are managing to fit all their accumulated "stuff" into what can't be that big of a space. I know they're working hard and have seen first hand that they're having fun too!

Hi Terri -- you're not too far away and while our weather is nothing compared to much of the rest of the country, I'd sure like just a few minutes of sunshine! I'm getting so tired of the constant fog and overcast...oh well, enough wining for now!

Thanks Caryns for the info -- I'm hoping we get a trip to Groton before our son graduates and you've provided some good info for planning.

Cindy, my son has just started A school and is also ET-Nav. How long is the schooling?

I am also in California although it has been very foggy here in the Central Valley. But not as cold as CT. My son was home for New Years and was walking around in short sleeves.

Mark, thanks for the comments about all the stuff that they accumulate. We are getting ready to ship my son's car to him and I was wondering what would happen to everything when he leaves for his first duty station. We do have awhile to figure this all out since he just started school.

One other note, if they have a car, I believe they will ship that if they're going outside CONUS (Hawaii or Guam). If they have a car and they want it at their duty station in the continental US, they will have to drive it, and will receive an allowance that will cover fuel etc. I think they will still ship the other stuff if they want. If the sailor is married though, I don't think they can get a first duty station outside CONUS (i.e. Guam and Hawaii).
