They take care of them very well in that regard, Cindy. Several days before they leave Groton, the Navy will have movers come and pack up their personal gear in their barracks rooms and ship it to their duty station at government expense. This includes all their stuff (TVs, etc...) that the sailor doesn't plan on taking onto the plane with them.

Quick question for everyone...my son's been accumulating lots of stuff while in school. What happens to it when they leave school for their first duty station? I'm just curious to know how their "stuff" is handled. Thanks!

Congratulations Sandy! Like many of you my son is ET-Nav, and like Mary's son he had originally wanted ET-Com "Radio". He's happy with his new assignment and finishes BESS this week. He's hoping the delay before his next clas is not too long, and looking forward to it getting started. I feel very fortunate being in California where the weather's pretty mild, but even still it's been darn cold this week, no sun for over a week now. I can't complain though when I look at what the rest of the country is going through.

My son's flight was late leaving Orlando, he was able to fly to Boston and then catch a train to Ct. then a cab to Groton, he said that he called to let them know that he might be late, but he got there last night. The hard part of this is saying good bye. I can't wait to visit.

Congratulations Roysecitytx! What an awesome time, enjoy your PIR and we'll see you back here with some great Grad stories -- hope the weather's okay for you!

My son leaves today from Groton with a group headed to NYC for New Year's. His birthday is tomorrow and he bought himself a 32" flat screen TV - just what he needs!

Oh, and school starts-up again on Monday, January 4th.

Hello everyone, My son's only been in Groton since the end of October, but a few things I would contribute to recent conversations are: 1) Delay in orders to Groton to occasionally happen. My son was supposed to leave on Oct 20, but was held until Oct 30 for medical test results, he was with another guy who experienced the same delay. 2) They can pay for a private mail box at the NEX - I think it's $8/month and receive packages or mail. I've sent USPS and UPS that's all been delivered without issue. It works really well (except for the fact that it's a hike back to the barracks uphill, right now in the snow and ice!) 3)Internet is available in the common area, or they can get Comcast in their room. My son's room is apparently outfitted with TV's, PS3, Wii and their laptops. I apologize for repeating myself from previous posts - but I REALLY recommend you try Skype (video calls) if you haven't already. It's awesome!

I have been on the Navy4Moms site since my son was in boot camp, now that he is in school at Groton, I realized that I have never introduced myself here. I am from Orlando, Fl. My son came home yesterday and I was really happy to see him.I told him that of my favorite things to do now is reading and viewing videos on this site. My son told me that the food is really good. And that it's beautiful. I am looking forward to my visit there. Have A Happy New Year, everyone.

There is supposedly wireless internet provided, but I understand that they can't get a usable signal in most of the rooms, and roommates usually pool their money to get Comcast cable and internet, plus all the "required" TV and gaming systems...

Hello all! My son's not making it home for the holidays. His leave starts tomorrow and he's using it to go to NYC for his 21st birthday on New Year's Eve - sounds like lots of fun! It's been tough without him home, but for anyone whose son has a laptop with webcam, I HIGHLY recommend you get a webcam and sign-up for Skype. We've had a few great conversations, and used the video call Christmas morning so we could all be "together" while opening gifts. It's not the same as being together, but SO much more than a cell phone call!

My son's been in Groton since the end of Oct. and in his room they already have TV and gaming systems. We just got him a nice down comforter (pretty inexpensive from Ikea) and sent him a down coat so he's warm when wearing his civvies. They are able to earn priveledges within a few weeks and I once heard Groton described as college with really good supervision. I'd have to say that's what it seems like to me!
