Welcome Gulf Coast Mom - Barracks life is a bit different for the "boat sailors" compared to the guys in Groton for sub school and "A" school. His barracks will be a little nicer, plus he'll be able to have female visitors (ahem...), a privilege the others don't have. Also, since he's a nuc, if he's not E-5 yet, he will be within a year; once a single sailor makes E-5, they can draw a housing allowance, and get a place off-base. Both of your gift ideas are good. Long 'underwear isn't as big a deal in port for a nuc, since they don't have any watches to stand outdoors like the coners do, but underway they will be real nice if they spend much time in the north Atlantic. Something a lot of people don't realize is how cold a submarine can be when it's operating in waters that are near freezing. Good luck to your son!

I hope it is OK I joined this group. My son is a nuke and will report Jan. 10 to the USS Memphis. That group is not very active and I am just interested in the area and Groton in general. He is from South Mississippi (as far south as you can go without going into the Gulf of Mexico so has no cold weather gear. In fact, today it was sunny and 65, we were watching the weather channel and all the snow in the northeast. We are lucky to have him home for this Christmas. He just graduated prototype 12/4/09. So - he did buy a two layer North Face jacket - but we were thinking long underwear and maybe a car emergency kit. He also will need to get new tires before he goes that way in January. Does anyone know - will he live in barracks for a while?? What are the barrack like? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Hi DebinMKC,
I can't speak for all Dad's, but it was for me, for sure. I'd be a little surprised to hear of a Dad who didn't squirt a few at PIR. They can have a car - but not right away - your son will get the lowdown, it'll depend on what phase of liberty he is in. At Groton they usually put students on day shifts, and evening shifts for school. They will also switch from one to the other; I believe instruction time is usually six hours a day.

Hello everyone just wanted to say thanks again for your thoughts and prayers on the death of my mother. My son was able to come home which I am so greatful to his command for allowing him. He is now on the way back to Pearl Harbor, Hi. It wasn't easy saying goodbye again but I am very happy to have had this short time with him. It snow yesterday here in New York so now he'll be on that beautiful warm island......he just called landed in Los Angeles...3 hour layover then Hawaii :):):):)

Hello everyone! My son graduated BC 10/16 and was originally scheduled to travel to Groton the Wed. after graduation. There was a mix-up with a blood test that put him on hold and he ended up not getting there until the 30th. They kept him busy in GL while he was waiting, but he was very eager to get started with school. My son's now a few weeks into BESS, so he'll be there for quite a while longer.

Karen -sounds like an interesting journey. What a great thing that he's found something he loves, doesn't get much better than that!

Nancy - the Sub Mom's group is where you'll find moms of sons who have finished school and are assigned to boats (along with moms like me who try to know what's coming, even if it's ten steps ahead). There are also groups for the different base locations.

Congrats Ruth Ann and Nancy, look forward to hearing about your PIR experiences!

They have a shuttle that runs to the airport on a regular basis - your son probably already knows about it; it's the same one they took when they arrived from Great Lakes.

Hi Sue & Karen,
My son's just getting started so I would love to hear from you about graduation as that's something I'm looking forward to next year. Thought I'd check to be sure you're part of the "sub moms" group, if not, you'll probably find others from your sons' boats there.
