Mary; he may have to submit a special request chit, but I'd be astonished if it wasn't granted to go to Grandma's for Thanksgiving.

Hi Ruth Ann,
When my son graduated on 10/16 there were some who flew to Groton on Friday, others much later. We had a full weekend with my son - a GREAT visit! Hope it works out for you!

Thanks Melodie for your words of wisdom. I just sent off box #1 and have a tracking number to see how it goes, and when it gets there. By shipping through my work I can get a really good discount when using UPS. We'll see what happens. Now, I'll be boxing the laptop, clothes, etc... to ship next week. Lots of fun!

Hi Marty! You're right, I need to check into the flat-rate boxes. I'll probably use UPS to get him his phone (and IPOD) and then look for something much cheaper for everything else.

After three longs weeks since PIR I finally talked to my son today. He arrived in Groton on Friday and is finding his way around. He'll start INDOC on Monday, and is bummed that he'll be behind everyone he was with at boot camp. He traveled with another guy who had a similar situation with a hold, and they're actually roommates now. He's very happy to be in Groton and can't wait to get his cell phone and laptop (I knew he'd call for them!). It's good to know he's finally arrived and I found it funny when he talked about it being such a small town and so quiet with nothing to do -- my thought as a mom is GOOD! He did say one thing that I thought was funny. Being from California he said he's talked with a few others also from CA and the food they miss most is In-n-Out burgers- a CA landmark! I'm thinking I'm going to get him a t-shirt to include in his box of stuff that I'll be shipping. Can't wait for the regular communication to get underway -- once I get past the shock of the cost of sending his stuff to him. I took a quick look at prices for fed ex and UPS and all I can say is OUCH! Oh well, the phone calls will be well worth it.

There have been a lot of people asking about recruiter's statements that some sub training is at Great Lakes on this group for a while. Many recruiters are very poorly informed about parts of the Navy outside their own, and sadly, many recruiters are just dummies, and aren't aware of it. SECF and submarine Machinist Mates (both auxiliary and weapons) all do their training after boot camp through "A" school at Groton. Missile techs start their early training in Groton, then go to Kings Bay. All other non-nukes on submarines have their "A" school somewhere else first - then go to Groton for sub school (BESS), then to the fleet.

Don't laugh Deb, there is...it's called SATO (scheduled airline ticket office) - they're at all Navy bases, handling mostly official travel, but I think they may be able to help with personal travel, also. He should be able to find them on base, at least if he asks one of his instructors. It's so easy on expedia/travelocity though - he oughta learn, like you say...

I have heard the only shuttles are to Providence - there is Amtrak service between New London and Hartford, though...

BESS is "Basic Enlisted Submarine School" and is the same for everyone. After BESS, the yeomen (YN), Storekeepers (SK) and Culinary Specialists (CS) get orders to their boats. The mechanical and electronic rates get different schools, teaching basic mechanic and electrical/electronic skills, then they get further separated for their "A" schools. Missile Techs get their "A" school at Kings Bay, all other ratings have their "A" schools in Groton - this includes MM-Weps, MM-Aux, ET-Comm, ET-Nav, and SECF (STS and FT).

My son said he'd be traveling Wednesday and start BESS on 11-2. We're waiting for word that he's actually headed to Groton, still no word from him. We have his cell phone and laptop so I figure as soon as he can call, he will!
