Hi JoAnne,
Thanks for your post. My son is also 6'3" and when he said he'd chosen being on a sub my husband and I could only wonder...really? He's still in BC, heading to Groton in October. Glad to hear your thoughts.

jjkbsk,
They will have liberty during BESS, and his training will all be at Groton. There are two tracks for sub MMs (not counting the nucs), MM-Weapons and MM-Auxiliaries. Both flavors have BMS (Basic Mechanic Skills ?) school after BESS, which is about a month (maybe a little less). They then go to separate "A" schools. The MM-W "A" school is ten weeks according to the site I've linked below, the MM-A "A" school should be about the same - so figure five-six months in Groton, total.

Whoops :) sorry, Star. BESS=Basic Enlisted Submarine School. The school Pat is almost certainly attending. Below is a link to their website...don't sweat the scary security warning for the site, that's to keep out terrorists...;)

Hi Ellen,
I'm almost positive the Navy will not cover any expenses in shipping a vehicle to a training command early in their enlistment. He may be able to get some help shipping it to his first ship, though - he has ready access to that information in Groton. He just has to check at the personnel office for the base (PSD).

codysmom,
most have more training after BESS before going to a boat; a few rates though - namely SK (Pat's husband), YN and CS have their "A" schools before BESS, unlike the electronics and mechanical ratings that make up the bulk of each sub school class, who have most of their training after BESS and before they get orders to a boat...

Hi Pat,
A new class of BESS begins every two weeks like clockwork; sailors generally begin BESS within a week or two of arrival in Groton. His chances of having some time on hold are probably greater after finishing BESS, where he may wait for a billet on a boat to open. There are only a couple of SKs on each submarine crew, so they sometimes have to wait a couple of weeks for orders to a boat after BESS (not always, though).

The ET/Comm "A" school is twenty weeks; two weeks longer than the other three SECF ratings.
