They are pretty much all on Fridays - holidays seem to throw them off a day sometimes. Below is the website for Sub School - it has phone numbers under the 'Contact Us' button, you might call the Quarterdeck to confirm date for a specific class.

JoAnne,
They will submit their "dream sheet" in "A" school with top three (I think) choices. The higher their class standing, the more likely they are to get their top choice(s). The ST rate is most interesting on a fast attack or SSGN, so I suspect that if an ST asks for a boomer (SSBN), they're likely to get it. SSGNs, BTW are also Trident platforms (converted for cruise missiles and SEAL delivery), there are two of those on each coast, so they would be comfortable for him, also.

Hi JoAnne,
I haven't been on any of the new Virginia class fast-attacks yet, but the LA class and especially, the Seawolf boats do not have much headroom. The Trident boats have a whole more - he may want to consider that. At 6'3', he should just fit into the racks (bunks) without having to bend his knees also. I've heard FT is the most popular choice of the SECF rates - they administer the LAN network on the boats, so it's real good experience when they get out of the Navy. ST is a pretty good job too, though. Oh hey - my bro tells me my Panthers (OHS) advanced to the super-sectionals in B-Ball tonight - woohoo!

Hi JoAnne,
Zach learned his rate about three weeks into BESS, so if Rich knows already, that was pretty quick. If he doesn't know yet for sure, but put ST as his first choice, he will probably get it. I heard from Zach last a week ago, so don't know if he's starting ATT yet. It seems like about a month on hold is about average though. Apparently it's self-paced and computer based, and the limiting factor is the number of seats. That, and how fast the guys in the current group go through the material. You can probably figure on about a month. You're probably most interested in total time spent in Groton through "A" school. The best I can tell, around 10-11 months total is typical for STs, FTs, and ETs.

All submariners are called "bubbleheads", not just the A-gangers :)

They graduate a BESS class every other Friday, unless a holiday causes the day to be shifted slightly. Below is a link for the Sub School website, if you click the 'Enlisted Training' button, it will show the latest stories. Look for the stories like "USS xxxx Class Joins The Fleet". They already have today's graduation posted, along with names of Honor Grads, etc... My son was in today's group, and classed up 1/5 for Indocs. My guess is they start indocs every other week as well, so should be another class starting indoc on Monday, that will graduate on Friday after eight weeks.

Just got off the phone with my son Dan. He got class up for TCNO today. Will have day classes, so he moved to a new building. His roommate is a boy named Andy. They were roommate when they were in BESS together. He's glad to have him back. He was so tired had duty today and was moving and a lot of running around. Not getting to much sleep tonight due to watch later on. But he can handle it. Just wanted to let in on the good news.

Is there anyone planning to attend this Friday's BESS graduation? If so, I would be very grateful if you could take a photo of my son Zach in the ceremony - he is in the sonar tech pipeline. Please let me know if you can, and I will e-mail you some info so you can make contact at the ceremony. Thanks
