I'll join in the chorus that being on hold is no stigma, Mom Stew. Keep in mind that each boat only has one or two SKs on the whole crew. A billet will open soon enough; in the meantime, he will now be drawing sub pay, once he finishes BESS.

Hi Trish,
I believe that they are limited to a range of 50 miles from the base, and must be in uniform. I would guess that Sunday is more realistic than Saturday though, if that is his fly day.

Mom Stew,
Hope your son gets what he wants - he should be learning any day now, I would think. BESS is just the start for everybody except SKs, CSs, YNs and I think Corpsmen. Zach should be there until well into the fall, I think. Last I spoke to him, he wasn't sure what homeport or type of boat he wants. I'm guessing SD will be his first choice, but it's tough to get, with only five boats down there.

Susan K,
Not 100% sure how long ST "A" school is, but it's around nineteen weeks. It seems that the pipeline from start of BESS to end of "A" school for ST, FT, and ET are all about eleven months, depending on length of hold periods. Regarding things to do around Groton - I understand there is a ferry from Groton to Long Island and Martha's Vineyard as well. Oh - and Mom Stew - yes, our boys graduate BESS 2/27.

Just wanted to give a quick hello to all of ya'll. It looks like my son, Jake, will be in Grotton for at least a year. I was so excited for him when he told me about going to Time Square for New Year's Eve and his visit to Boston. I've barely traveled north of Ky myself (with the exception of Great Lakes IL, of course) so I'm so happy for him. Is there anyone in this group from Kentucky?

Groton is about 3 to 3.5 hours from NYC if you drive. BY train Amtrak its 2.35 hours. I live in Dutchess county NY about 1.5 hours from NYC.

Zach likes it so far, he was going for nuc first, but didn't get the math waiver he needed. Sonar was his first choice of the SECF options, so that's cool. I was a nuc on boats myself in mid-80's, and I know he will enjoy his time at sea a lot more as a sonar tech, especially if he winds up on fast attacks. He'll get to play in all the cool "submarine warrior" stuff, something nucs don't get much of, since they're pretty much just pushing the boat through the water. The guys in the front of the boat (coners) tend to get a lot more liberty also.
