Hi JoAnne,
Nice to see someone from Aurora on here - I graduated from Oswego HS in '79. My son Zach has been in Groton since just before Christmas. You're on the right track with what 'rate' means - it's the job your sailor will be getting. Sounds like Rich is in the SECF program like Zach, and will either be sonar (that's Zach's), fire control, or navigation electronics. Groton has been slightly better than Chicago's weather this winter, but it's been rough all over, including here in the Pacific NW. Spring is on the way though, woohoo! Zach has two more weeks of BESS, and I believe there are about 80 in a class. Most likely, at least a couple of guys in Rich's division also went to Groton. Welcome to the group!

Just drop off my son at the train station. He's heading back to Groton. It sure was great having him home for the weekend. Miss him already. Can't wait for the next visit. Good thing he's only 2.5 hours away by car. Train a little longer but not so bad.

Hey guys my son is coming home for the weekend. Since there are no classes on Monday. Just a couple of days but I'm so glad he's coming. I won't be able to pick him up due to work so he's taking Amtrak to New York. He's only 2.5 hours from home driving. It will take him a littile longer to get here but worth the time. Also he should be finishing with ATT by the 20th of this month then comes TCNO. A very happy MOM. :)

Hi Wendy,
Congrats to your son on his upcoming graduation. FYI - the Nevada has been in drydock at the shipyard for a refueling overhaul in Bremerton (10 miles from Bangor) and will remain there until around the end of the year (give or take a couple of months).

Hi all just a quick note as I am at work. We just got back from vising Robert this past weekend at Groton. Wow is the base nice and all of the nice young men we met. Rob leaves for GA this weekend and really can not wait to get to warm weather. We had a very nice time in CT but the 12 hour drive from Mich was something. I too woll be joining the Ga group but will check in on all of you. Stay in touch and stay warm

Pam,
If you are asking what the NAV-ETs do on the boat, I can help somewhat. They are the group responsible for keeping track of the precise location of the boat. They operate and maintain all the electronics and computer equipment for navigation (often with a little help from nuc ETs when their gear breaks). Subs have several methods of determining their position, and NAV-ETs are responsible for all of them. I'll mention that it's not as simple as using a GPS, since being underwater complicates that. They also maintain all of the charts (nautical maps) on the boat, which used to be the job of Quartermasters (QMs) in earlier days.

Good evening all. Well it's in the low teens again tonight here in Michigan. I need to some help. Plan on being in Groton next weekend to see Rob he leaves for GA on the 5th and wants his car before he goes. We have reservations at the Navy Lodge but has anyone ever rented a car one way. I want to rent one to go back to Michigan. I don't like to fly if possible and was reashering flights and all of the more afordable one are at least 1 stop with long layovers we can be home faster driving. Anyway any info will help. You all have a good weekend.

Tammy,
Zach will be in Groton for BESS, ATT, techno and "A" school. Holds will depend on what training pipeline the sailor is in. You really can't draw conclusions based on others, unless they're in the same, or closely related programs - I'm afraid I don't know anything about MTs, but I suspect there is a group on the site that might. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that BESS isn't considered a "C" school. "C" schools are advanced, specialized schools, attended well after "A" school, that are almost always given to sailors who extend their enlistments, or re-enlist, after spending some time in the fleet. Zach started BESS two weeks ago, so must be in the class just before Austin's.

Tammy,
The only mentions of being on hold at Sub School that I've seen have to do with the training pipeline getting backed up a little bit. After BESS, a lot of the training is self-paced and computer-based with only so many seats available. There are a couple of gaps in training where the holds tend to happen, but I think the longest ones are 2-3 months. My son is SECF (probably ST), and expects to be in Groton for close to a full year.

Finally my son class up today. He's has afternoon classes. He had hope to get morning classes so he would be able to have the rest of the day for himself. Well I guess its better than having evening classes. He said its about a month long ATT school.
