I have a couple more questions, please. My SR is my husband. We're expecting our first child in August. As MMS, do you think he had a good possibility of being granted paternity leave when she is born? Also, 4th of July weekend they are vacated liberty, correct? Are you allowed to fly home and see your wife during those four days? Lastly, how long do wives have to wait to move with their husbands? His training is over 20wks, so technically I am allowed. Please help. I'm so lost.

Went to see our son today in Groton:) I know he's only been there a week but just wanted to see him!
Took him and 2 other sailors to lunch on base and they are doing great! They looked so handsome in their uniforms(black pants and khaki shirt) and we were just beaming with pride for all of them!

Thanks ladies, it's a big accomplishment that all our young men complete there at New London. I'm so very proud of all of them.

FATHOMOM- you're absolutely right there are all sorts of distractions some good some not so good in Groton, just like everywhere. I think growing up under the microscope of the Navy can be pretty tough for our young men. They have so much to learn and figure out as soon as they arrive. I also agree instructor's are the unsung heroes and do not get the credit they deserve. They give so much of the their time and energy.

To the new mom's as FATHOMOM said learning to let go... well that never really happens it kind of evolves into adjusting to a new lifestyle for us. I mean how do you really "let go" of your kids. I don't think  that's possible!

mrsb- Do you think he will put some of that cleaning experience to use when he gets home???......LOL

KevsMom, that's so awesome about both of your boys!!   Hooyah and Hoorah to them both!!

My son and ProudNavyMom's and KevsMom all arrived in Groton the same day; June 8th of last year.  My son and ProudNavyMom's son are in a different class, radio, that takes a little longer than Kevsmoms son.  They all had to wait to class up and clean a lot, like ProudNavyMom said.  ACU also means "always cleaning up"!!!  They have completed BESS, ATT and TCNO and are now in the final part of A school, so yes, it can take over a year to get through sub school.  He is really enjoying Groton and all his new, and old friends.  They are a very tight group, which is a wonderful thing.  It will all be worth it in the end!!

Kevsmom93 - YES,  you CAN!! That is wonderful, exciting and very proud news - I am glad you shared with all of us. Be proud of yourself too! Your sons have made important decisions and choices to stay focused on their studies and future jobs. HOOYAH! Now, hugg that boy/man/Sailor and totally enjoy your time with him. Continued prayers for both of your sons continued training!!

Once out of BOOT , our NAVY children must continue to stay on task for their imperative jobs and futures to come.  Our son admitted it was a very easy for him to neglect study time and head out to exciting adventures with his fellow Groton NAVY brothers. There are so many cool things to do and places to visit. This choice of his has made his classes tougher for him, since then he is much more diligent. We are thankful he was able to see the direction he was headed. We are also thankful for the instructors that often are models for our son's - our son has been fortunate in this. All of our son's are young adults, on their own in an entirely different environment than our homes. The decision must be their own. This letting-go stuff has been quite a learning experience for us!  I do my best not to nag our son tooooo much- they must live and learn.  And I have many, many prayers for that Holy Spirit to MOVE them in the direction best for them !!! ha ha ha!! Oy! sorry, I digress.

Cath Bubblehead -yes , the training our son's do at Groton can easily take up to at least one year to complete. I agree, the rate may make a difference. Our son is ETNAV and has done all of his training at Groton. When he arrived at Groton there was plenty of "hurry up and wait". They meet their quals as soon as possible and continue cleaning.....and more cleaning.....and ACU (await to class up). Our son has shared with us that he too has had an overall positive, learning, growing experience while at Groton. Our son is thankful, so are we. Thank God.

Fair Weather and Following Seas to all of our son's.God speed!

Welcome new moms! Congratulations to you and your new Sailors! My son has really enjoyed his stay in Groton.

Thank you ProudNavyMom#1 yep we're almost there! He arrives home on Friday but we still don't know which airport or a time. Hoping he gets his flight info. soon :-)  Okay I just need to brag on my son Kevin's behalf...he graduated second in his class! He is an honor graduate along with two others (I think I got that right). So proud of him. He told me he was fourth just two weeks ago and worked his A## off to move up to second! This whole experience has been such a confidence builder for him. He always tell us how much he's loving his job :-)

Can I have just a tiny bit more brag time....our youngest son Ryan(our Marine) has graduated his first stage of training at Corry Station, Pensacola on Thursday. He graduated as Honor Man top of his class! So proud of him and all his hard work. He just arrived last night in San Angelo, Texas at Good Fellow AFB for his next stage of training.

I wish all of your son's much success in their journey!

Hi Ladyrocker, Depending on your son's rate it could be true. Mine is SECF sonar and will do all of his training in Groton. He has finished BESS (submarine school) ATT advanced technical training. He has been waiting to class up for Techno, and last will be A school. He arrived in groton Dec 8, and expects by about December to actually get a boat!

Comment by Ladyrocker on May 4, 2014 at 8:20am

My son was also told that he'd be going to Groton for training but he told me it would be for a total of 58 weeks.  Not sure how true that is and I am sure his recruiter told him that since he was told that before he left for BC.
