Ladies, you would be proud of me, I finally got off my lazy keyster & got the box put together, so I'll be shipping my son his box tomorrow as a "test box" to see how long it takes to get there.  (My husband keeps thinking of last minute things we need to add to it, or else I would have shipped it this morning.)  We are Christmas shopping for him this weekend and will send additional boxes soon.  Man, he was hard enough to shop for when he was home, no less sending stuff around the world.  And you can't send anything of value, OR candy!   I am planning on going to Hobby Lobby or someplace and finding him one of those miniature Christmas trees--I keep telling my husband that the two foot tall ones are too big for the flat rate boxes, he won't listen to me, so my best bet is get to a craft store & buy one that I know will fit--I have one I keep on my desk, so I know they make them 8 inch-ish.  There's another Iowa mom out here with a son on the Cable, right?  I know I read that somewhere! Where are you located?  I am in the Des Moines area.  (This is so hard when we are all communicating in one continuous loop.)

ktssong---where in Ohio did you live?  I grew up in the Cleveland area, and lived there til about 13 yrs ago.  Small world!    I'm going to have to plow through all of these comments & write down who is who so that I can keep you all straight!

Happy Halloween, everyone..............enjoy your trick or treaters!

Ktssong please tell everyone in your office that I appreciate their generosity, it means a great deal to know that there are still so many kind hearted people in this world who care about others.
I am sorry to hear about your birth mother, I pray you will find the answers you are looking for & most of all find peace. Blessings!

I am just popping in tonight to share a little too.  I work in an office and they also give me things to send to my son and they wanted to do Christmas so I put out an email to all of them today that if they want to bring in something for a box to give to the guys to bring them in.  THey are so excited.  I said I would be sending a Santa hat and Santa bag to my son so he can pass out some goodies to all he can so they can share snacks for the holidays.   I had shared last week about my birth mother passing away and trying to find her plot at the cemetary.  I haven't gotten back for a second look but I sent a letter out in the mail to a surviving adopted son she had adopted after my birth and I saw his name and address on the funeral orders so I mailed him a letter.  I got a response today from the resident at the address that said, this is an unusual call but I got your letter and my 3 yr old tore it open.  The person you mailed it to doesn't live here but I wanted to at least let you know so you don't wonder if he got the letter.  I had to admit and thanked him for that call because I would have been waiting to hear from that too without ever knowing that he wasn't there.  I must have some archeologist blood in me because I keep digging thinking I'm going to find something.  I don't know why but I do.  I think that when I'm done I'll know it.  I'll feel it.  I think that will come when I find her plot, hopefully this weekend sometime.

My daughter in law sent me a message today. She said my son is getting ready to sign up for classes to work towards his degree.  That makes me happy.  It's nice to know while they are in the military they can work on their education too.  He gets a three day weekend this weekend so I hope he gets to do some site seeing.  I told him to go to the underwater sea acquarium one of the moms mentioned.  So I hope he gets too.  I told him this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to try to see some of Guam.  His deployment is half over next week and he said he's only gone off the base one time.  I'm sure I don't understand how big the base is and how much there is to offer on it and how tired they are after the end of the day.  I look forward to visiting him after deployment and hearing all the stories.  I agree with all of you holidays are going to be tougher than normal this year because it's never the same when one is missing from around the table.  I'm trying to approach it positively as I can but somehow I keep feeling myself a little sadder than normal just on the onset of it so I gotta keep thanking God that he is safe and encouraging him too.  I'm sure all of them miss us as much as we miss them.

Good night all.

Hi Charlotte my son will be there about 4 years. He was just home on leave, so I know we probably won't see him again for about a year. I am so happy for you to have your son home for Christmas. This will be a hard one for us, since it is our first one without our son here to celebrate with us. I am going to make some of his favorite goodies & send them to him. I know he will like that. I did read a notice somewhere that said to mail overseas military holiday packages by November 15 to ensure delivery by Christmas. This group is s great, by the way. I hope you have a great day!

Hi Rhonda! I hope your son is enjoying Guam so far. There are some great things to do. How long will he be there? Mine has been there almost 2 years and has another year to go. I am very blessed and will have him home for Christmas :). We haven't seen him in a year. Packages do take about 10-14 days. Spanky's mom has good advice on packaging. I always put stuff in plastic bags and extra padding. I have sent chocolate chip cookies and they are always fine. But I wouldn't go with just a chocolate bar :)

I'm glad you have joined us. We need to support each other because Guam is just so.far.away!!!!

Take care!

Rhonda, it usually takes 10-14 days for my son to get his package(s)(from Va.)..you'll know what to send...when you see it & know its something he likes, send it.....one bit of advice-no chocolate!!  it melts...any thing that melts shouldnt be sent..its always hot over there.....i want to send my son some peanutbutter balls (his favorite) in his Christmas package, but i cant :( oh..and anything that could get squashed, busted or or damaged, i always place in a ziploc bag or baggie, so it doesnt get on anything else in the box if it does happen to be destroyed during shipping!! sending prayers for a peaceful heart....its sooooooo hard to have them sooooooo far away!!!!  God bless you & yours!!!

I am so new to this, as my son just arrived in Guam the first week of October. All of this info has been of great help to me. Sounds like you ladies are sending some awesome gifts to your sailors for Christmas. I really need to get on the ball & start putting a Christmas box together for my son. You all have given me some great ideas, as I really didn't know what to or not to send. Can anyone tell me approximately how long it takes for them to receive packages? I mailed my son a box over a week ago & he still has not received it yet. May you all have a blessed day!

Our Ombudsman is great about reminding us when someone slips on FB, then the poster usually just deletes it. FB is only as good as its privacy settings. It is always hard to know who is legit and who is an "enemy" troll trying to get info, LOL! Travel times/ dates are a big no-no though for safety. When it comes to names, please be aware there are sometimes people our sailors KNOW who would also like to cause trouble for them, whether back home or on a ship. Could be an ex, a crush, a disgruntled shipmate. Maybe not today- but at some point they could have some personal or work drama. Such jerks sometimes search the internet for their "in" and fly with their gossip (so-and-so and his mom don't get along; you will never believe what I found out about so-and-so). I have heard about such scenarios. On an FB group recently, one mom mysteriously posted that her son found out about something (IDKW) she confided in the group and he was mortified and not talking to her. I would like to think we are all friends here, but still best to be cautious and avoid danger and/or drama.

Geri Kaye, I'm sure it's nice to finally have some travel plans and what an adventure for him! It the lack of communication will be tough:(

ktssong, I am feeling like a slacker compared to all you are sending to your son! I better get on it! Lol. Love everything you are sending him. Christmas is gonna be tough!

I asked other groups what they do as far as naming their sailors. A lot put first name and they say their rate. The Cable facebook page has put my sons first and last name and his rate with a picture of him so I think first name and rate are ok to say, what do you think LivNLrn? I think you've been on here the longest :)
