I just had the family send a card signed by everyone with the famous camel from the commercials that says "what day is it" and one of his little nephews put a message bubble and said hump day.....but everyone signed today for him and one for his wife since she's alone....we are celebrating in our own way his Battalions halfway mark of deployment being half over....last year her and I lived in Ohio together for his first deployment and went out to eat together for celebration....this year we are both sending him surprise goodies to make him smile and I'm sending her one too.  For him I had our entire family photo which is 23 of us brothers, sisters, grandma, me and all his nieces and nephews put on a T-Shirt and the Text above it says "Someone in Ohio loves me".....I didn't know what to put on it.  But I thought he could wear it to sleep in or hang out in.  Or maybe he won't wear it but I think it will make him smile when he sees it.  I'm shipping it this week when it arrives and hers tomorrow.

I was thinking for the holidays about shipping  him ahead of time a Santa hat and some homemade cookies or candy canes and a santa bag so he could go around and pass them out to the other guys.  Not sure if that is too corny or not but he likes to wear Santa hats and I thought it would come in handy to spread some Christmas cheer.  I like the idea of the cake in a jar and the subway gift cards.  I think that will be great idea.  I gotta try to get these things out soon.  I want to mark the package in side do not open til Christmas for that holiday one.
Nice to read all the posts after running around all weekend.  Prayers to all.  God Bless your families stateside and your sons and daughters serving.  Together we can all encourage them and each other.  Blessings.

Hi Geri Kaye! Godspeed to your son! In the spirit of opsec, best to avoid posting travel dates! ;) Nice to see the activity back to normal for Guam Moms!

wflorence...how interesting. Most of our sons are assigned to the Cable. How long will he be on the GW? I have a few friends from different groups whose sailors are assigned to the GW

Cindy the GW is the USS George Washington :). Don't worry, I have googled many times to figure out sailors rates and places that they are station. :)

The cake in a jar sounds good. I think you all should just send one to me! ;-)

Cindy, I have shipped chocolate chip cookies, his favorite, I put them in a ziploc baggie then into a ziploc container, a small square one, so they don't have any room to wiggle around. He always says they are delicious. And he selfishly doesn't share with his roommate!

As far as gifts go that's a tough one. My son is in the barracks so he has some room, not much, but some. But being on the ship is tough. Does he have a Kindle or a Tablet or a Nook? If he does you could get him a gift card to Amazon to download books. They also have a Subway in the NEX. I always get him a gift card for there. I have tried to get gift cards to the NEX but haven't succeeded.

As far as using our sailors name I think it's okay. Just first name or we can all just keep saying 'my sailor' :)

My son is also an EM on the cable, he has been over there since the end of August. I got 2 boxes of goodies shipped this morning! I made the "cake in the jar" , one box of cake mix made 4 pint jars. I got a yellow cake mix and mixed in 3/4 cup peanut butter, they baked up great, I trimmed the tops off before sealing and it tasted great. I sent choc frosting. This is the opposite of his favorite cake, choc cake with homemade peanut butter icing with a mini reeces cup on the top. I think it will be close enough for him to enjoy. I was afraid of homemade frosting spoiling before it got there.  Has anyone made choc chip cookies and sent? How do they fare?? I sent some so when I get feedback from him I will post. I am afraid of melting I sealed them and doubled bagged them. His girlfriend came out last night and helped with the baking  we had such a great time, and he was IM'ing by the end of the evening, so that made everything complete. Does anyone have ideas for sending Christmas presents, my boy is still on the ship, so no space for storage?

One has question, are we not to say our kid's name??? Is that a risk?

Hi Rhonda! Glad you joined this page! We have been having more interaction in the last couple months then in the two years I've been on here. Some of our sons have been in Guam for awhile so we are glad to answer questions as best we can.

I'm excited the Cable got back to Guam and I am looking forward to talking my son this weekend and hearing about Japan.

If you ladies are on Facebook and your sailor is on the Cable you should 'like' the USS Frank Cable page. They post great pics of our sailors while underway.

ktssong, I'm sorry your 'visit' was sort of unproductive but I am glad you are going to go back and follow up. Prayers you find what you are looking for.

LMD Iowa, did you get your box shipped?

I hope you all have a great weekend!

My son just made it to Guam the first week of October. He is an EM on the Cable. He's my baby & I miss him so much. It's been hard dealing with him being so far away from home, so I am very happy to have found a group like this who understand & give each other support & encouragement. I am very proud of him & we do communicate when he's able to. So thankful for all of our military, they make so many sacrifices to serve our country.

Wow.  I feel like I've found my Guam family of moms now.  When I first started getting on I would be the last post made after several days but I kept writing hoping others would be out there.  I agree this is nice to have some time to stop and visit with others who have sons on the other side of the world.  Especially with the holidays right around the corner.  I think it will be hard on them and us so I think the more we all stick together we can help keep them up and ourselves.  My son is a Seabee and their motto is "Can DO"  so I'm going to carry that into the holidays.  We "can do" this.  I'm already gearing up to get things to him for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Thanks to all of you for the thoughts and prayers as I went to find my mom's grave.  It was an unsuccessful mission but I'm not giving up.  I had the section and the plot number and found the section but I probably walked past 1000 or more graves up and down every single row more than once and I couldn't find it.  An old man even stopped to help me.  I had to finally leave because they were closing.  I emailed the cemetary that night and called the next day and she was so helpful.  She told me there was no headstone, it was a stone on the ground so it would be hard to find but it is there.  So I will venture back.  I thought I read them all but I will try again.  I feel it's important to finish what I started.

Livnlrn, is the Under the Sea Acquarium just an acquarium or is it a restaurant too?  I like hearing about things like this to tell my son to try to get to some of it because his stay won't be as long as others.  Seabees go out 8 months and then homeport 8 then back out 8....on and on for his entire service but everytime it's somewhere different.

LMDIowa, I cannot believe you sent leaves because when I read that I felt like you read my mind.  I had done the same thing earlier today.  I have a package of leaves I gathered for some aromatheraphy for him to remember Fall.  A little scent of home.

I think it's unanimous, I must definitely try to make a cake in a jar.  It would be great to do for the holidays.  I love hearing from all of you.  Regarding the customs forms, I'm always afraid to put what's really in the box on the form because I don't want someone to not deliver it.  I must have trust issues.  He has been receiving everything and that's been great news to hear.

Have a great evening all.  I'll keep checking in too.

Hi everyone! This is the most activity I've seen on here in the entire year my son has been over there. Finally! He is an HT and got to Guam last October. It's been quite a year. He is assigned to the Cable but is with the USS Emory at the moment. One thing that is hard to get used to is the lack of communication when they are underway.

By the way LMD Iowa, we are from Iowa too!

Keep up the chatter on here you guys, it's so nice getting a notification on my phone whenever someone posts here.
