My son was very diligent about getting off the Express way everyday Mon - Fri for the Rush hour starting at 2:30!!!! On day we all wanted to go to have lunch down town and he say no way we have to get home before rush hour starts!  I was like what?  He said no we will eat around his apt....  Believe me it is bad on the express way. He says it backs up for miles and you do not hardly move!!!!  Just a heads up. I stayed at his apt. on Ewa Beach and we drove to see all the sights to save money in a hotel. On the down side we had to drive to see everything. He was our driver.... We spent lots of time with him because of this. A trip I will remember for ever :)

Good morning,

It is a beautiful cool day in Michigan. We must be getting ready for our fall season.

We also know about these various places to stay, but K-Bay is out first choice. The reason is:  it is away from the hustle and bustle of the city. My sailor reminds me that when we come, it is his vacation also. We would visit another island but he will have duty. There are quiet places on Oahu. You just have to be diligent and find the places that local people go to.

Your sailor has to be there to sign you in when you register for military places to stay. All his "friends" are on the boat.

There are many fun things to do there that do not cost you an arm and a leg. Hiking, going to the beach, driving around the island etc. I found the food trucks expensive and not so good. There was a place along the road that had diff vendors and served hot corn, meat on a stick, $2 and cut up fruit. There were excited that they had apple in it, but being from Mich, that did not impress me. Fresh pineapple $4, absolutely yummy.

We are planning on staying at K-Bay. We were not able to get the cottages for as long as we wanted, they have a full kitchen and I can cook. The Lodge there has a mini-kitchen, no real cooking, but they have grills and they serve a hot breakfast everyday so it all works out.

The friendly skies are calling me!!!!

It must be your sailor who signs you in. They ask for all of his information (rank, boat, etc.) when the reservation is made. There are some other hotels that are close to the Hale Koa but not on the beach that are fairly reasonable too.

If your son has any good friends who are in port, they may be able to sign you in? Before we went, I found a couple of nice rental houses on vrbo.com that were reasonable. If you go that route, be sure that it is in a safe neighborhood. Many areas are not safe.

Oh wow did not know that for sure MeeMaw (proud Mom of Mike. I like that show lol! Thanks everyone for your much need comments. I'm going real soon for homecoming just got my ticket bought to go. I will be spending a couple of days alone waiting on him to come in so if he has to sign me in that would be a problem. And I'm glad  sunshine73 that you mentioned traffic. That is really helpful to know so I can try to be on time.

I have stayed at the Hale Koa twice now. The rate of the room is partially based on the rank of your sailor. The lower the rank, the lower the price of the room. I have to pay more now that my sailor is a chief. Also, your sailor needs to be in port at the time of your arrival so that they can sign you in. I had a garden room the first time I stayed there and luckily I was high enough to see the ocean from my patio. It is a lovely hotel on 72 acres of Ft. De Russey. Gardens, picnic areas, right on Waikiki. In fact it's next door to the Hilton Royal Hawaiian, so you know it's location is nice. Walk to just about anywhere or take a bus. Lots of restaurants close by too. There are several restaurants in the Hale Koa and they are fairly reasonable. As someone mentioned before there is a small exchange and there are fridge's in the room. They have two pools, one is for over 18 only, which is nice. Did you know the TV show Hawaii Five-O films there?

The hotel was about 15-20 minutes from Pearl. Traffic can be terrible there.

We just were there about a month ago. There was a parking fee of $7 per day. Rooms are from $91-$160. The grounds are amazing. You wouldn't have to leave the hotel if you didn't want to. There is even a small exchange on site for snacks/drinks/etc.   They will give you a guest card when you check in so you can shop there. it is halekoa.com.  It is even walking distance to the shopping in Waikiki. Next time we go we are just going to hang out with our sailor at the hotel.  My friend stayed at the hotel at K-Bay and she said it was nice. K-Bay was beautiful. It is about 40 minutes from the Honolulu/Waikiki area though.

   http://www.navyformoms.com/group/hawaii/forum/topics/where-to-stay-...

try this link navyboy.....  It's from our library up above (scroll up)  several pages (view all) of tips, hints hotels, sights, etc for the island.  Maybe it will help you?

I copied just one of the discussions up there from the 1st page by Pat Feb2012. there might be more in other stored discussions.  (when we stayed, we were at a private home, at K-Bay-won't be helpful at all if you need to be near Pearl)
