Thank you! This mom is NOT sending anything as big as furniture LOL. Before we moved to our place in FL we had it in rental.  Then when we moved down, I brought my everyday stuff with me.  I have an attic full of duplicates ..mainly kitchen items (pots, pans, utensils, iron, bake-ware etc.)  Mailing in bulk would be cheaper for me and less expensive for them.  If that isn't going to work then it's time for a garage sale so I can get some of my space back!  I'm definitely going to check out the swap meet.

Swap Meet!  yes, he should go there (it's open3x a week-near Pearl I think?)  here's the link....  My son bought some household items there, and on craigs list too.  it all worked out okay for him.  I use usps too for house address there on the island.  (care packages I mean)  Have never shipped anything to him via UPS or FED EX.

I had better luck sending packages to my sailor with USPS.  We tried UPS and FedEx but had problems.  This was a few years ago, but I have been using USPS ever since.

Heavier packages may have to be sent UPS or FedEx though.  If you are sending furniture type items I would check with a freight company also.

Also have him check out the Swap Meet at the football stadium.  I know it is open on Saturdays but don't remember what other days.  There are good deals there.  Also he should check with any sailors who are transferring to a new location.  Some of them just sell their heavy/large items instead of moving them.

I'm looking for advice on mailing packages to Hawaii.  Any experience? Horror stories? My son will be in off base housing and will need everything.  I have an attic full but ....is it worth it.  I've checked out the stores in the area, somethings might be easier to buy on-line and arrange for store pick-up. Works in Sam's and Wal-Mart here hope it works the same there.

CruAn, I agree that cash is better than gift cards. For my son's birthday, I just transferred the money to his account, then told him about it. Easy peasy.

Mom from St Pete I found gift cards go missing from the mail all too often. Unbelievable as it sounds, but it's happened to us a few times.(With USPS)  I now direct deposit into their accounts. When every $ counts it's tough to pay the activation fee and then watch the value tick away if not used in time.  Good luck to your son with his new car.  My son is waiting for his to arrive, still in transit.

Seen this article and pictures below on Face Book and thought maybe some of you would like to read it. Hoping next year maybe my son can be at this ceremony for reenlistment.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert conducted a reenlistment ceremony for Sailors who signed up for an additional enlistment in the Navy.  These included Sailors from commands at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
In his remarks to Region and Middle Pacific Sailors he spoke about, among other things, the current budget situation under sequestration, what the Navy is doing to combat and prevent sexual assaults, and how the Navy is rebalancing to Asia-Pacific.  He asked all the Sailors to thank their families on his behalf for their support.
The CNO answered nearly two dozen questions from the audience.  Adm. Greenert was introduced by Rear Adm. Rick Williams, Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific.
