2 Chronicles 7:14
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land".

I am concerned for our country. Love you all,

Sue, here are the lyrics for "America the Beautiful" that you asked for:

America the Beautiful

Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

DC, Thank you for posting the lyrics. At the elemetary school I attended, each morning the complete school body - students, teachers, etc. - gathered and sang one of the patriotic songs and said the Pledge of Allegience. This is one of the songs, and one of my favorites.

Tamara, it has always been one of my favorite songs.  I do wish that it were our national anthem.  It is certainly easier for the general public to sing than the "Star-Bangled Banner."   It describes our national beautifully and is our own song.

Few can sing our national anthem well.  The absolute best rendition I ever heard was at the opening of a gymnastics meet at the University of Florida.  We all stood and the anthem began.  It was like, "Whoa! This guy can sing!"  The singer was a math professor at UF who also happens to be a trained opera star.  He sings bass and has sung at the Metropolitan Opera in NY.  But really short of having an opera quality voice, it is usually butchered.

Many years ago I had a fellow graduate student who was from Australia.  Nothing about the US suited him and I was really getting fed up.  One day he asked me and my husband about our opinion on some policy.  When we told him how we felt, he burst out with "How can you feel that way!" and he went on to state that we didn't even have our own music for our national anthem.  He was referring to "God Bless America," which uses the music from "God Save the Queen."  Well I let loose and told him that he was a guest in our country, taking advantage of our educational system and if it did not suit him, he was more than welcome to go home.  I also told him that he did not even know our national anthem.  It was many, many years before he spoke to me again.  His wife did ask why I was so annoyed with him.  I told her that I felt that at least he could say something nice, like the mountains are beautiful... which they are.  But absolutely nothing suited him.

Ah, but I do digress.  I think we are fortunate to have some lovely patriotic songs, many of which would make grand national anthems.  I just wish we had one I could sing. :-(  But then I can't sing anything.

good going Dori.  I tell people if they don't like it here, try a 3rd world country.  It was his loss on not speaking to you.

I don't sing our national anthem well, but I do know all of the words.  I figure that counts.  And if you ever get to visit Fort McHenry, that song really comes to life-at least for me it did.

I've not been to Fort McHenry but I have been across the bay from it.
